FINAL REPORT ON JAMBOREE
Editors note: This Is the final
report from Allen K err, *ho s e r
ved as the P ilot's correspondent
at the National Scout Jam boree ir
Valley Forge , Pa.
Dear Folks:
I am scrry about not getting a
report in for last week but I fo r
got to mail it.
After the excitement of the boy
breaking his leg, we fixed dinner
then went to a cam pfire and to
bed.
We washed clothes the next
morning and that took all m orn
ing. My folks and Mr. and Mrs.
K»-nn- th Hughes came by while
we were fixing lunch. Ed and I
were the cooks. The folks tool
pictures of us in our apron and
caps and of the camp then left to
catch their plane for home.
We walked over to Region I
where they had a replica of the
*fayflower. Then after dinm rwi
f
ad another cam pfire. It was the
"Talents of Scouts' night and was
interesting.
Next morning after breakfast
there was an aerial show put on
by the Air Force Thunderbirds
who fly F100C Super Sabres. Th<
re st of the day passed quickly,
with not much to do but visit the
other areas.
That night we had a sectional
campfi re.
The next day or two was spent
on the rifle range, archery range
and skeet shoot.
The last day we w ashed clothes
until noon then w. ate and started
packing, but it wasn t until four
o'clock that we tore our camp
down. That night we had a box
dinnf-r and went to the closing
ceremony where they had all the
Canadian Scouts on stage and the
story of Baden-Powell and the
100 years of scouting was told.
At closing all 50,000 Boy-
Scouts stood up and lit a little
candle, which lit up the sky for
miles around.
That night we slept under the
sta rs and the next morning after
a box meal we hiked to the train
depot and started for New York.
We arrived in N.Y. about three
lours later and took buses to out
hotel. That day we visited Times
Square, Rockefeller Center and
he Empire State building. At
i ight we went to Ebbets field to
see a game between the Dodgers
and the Cubs. The Dodgers won
6-4.
Next day we went on a tour
around Manhatten Island. We saw
the Mayflower II, and was s u r
prised to see such a small boat.
It wasn't much larg e r than our
excursion boat.
