In a hot letter to Postmaster
Arthur Summerfield, Congn ss-

the Harbor Post Office buildin,:
is a "disgrace" to the Post
Office department.
Porter said that half tin old,
structure was a chicken coop,
and the other half was a milk
shed. "The two sheds were put
together and a little paint applied
and for the past ten years it has
been called the United States
Post Office".
The letter is re-printed in full
on page two of this week's Pilot.
Porter calls for the construct
ion of a new building which would
leased to the department.

BROOKINGS, OREGON
$ 3 M IL L IO N PROJECT M A Y START I N JA N .
A big section of the sparkling
new Oregon Coast highway, be
tween Brookings and Whaleshead
Creek, will be ready to let for
bids by the first of the year, if
the local engineers have their
way in the matter.
The state highway engineers,
working out of a Brookings office
have set up a tentative schedule
for the new highway between
Brookings and Meyers Creek.
A portion of that highway, one
unit of the Brookings to Whales
head Creek, is scheduled to be
let in December, and the second
unit between Brookings and Whale-
she ad will be ready to be let by
January o f ,958.
The estimated cost for th e
work for this seven mile section
will be well over $3,000,000.
Surfacing on this new stretch
won't be done until 1959 or 1960,
according to the present schedu
ling.
Engineering crews are curren
tly working on the full line to
Meyers Creek, and have pro
gressed very well. There a r e
two lull crews in the field, witfi
about 16 men, with about six in
the Brookings office.
Engineering on the whole pro
ject won't be completed until at
least July of next year.
The existing timetable c al 1 s
for the expenditure of the entire
$12,600,000 on the Brookings to
Meyers Creek section. This is
the amount of the bond issue
passed by the last state legisla
ture.
The engineers line will take off
from the new section of highway
101 in Brookings, completed last
year, near the Anderson place,
and cut off in a straight line to
a point be hind the Hedberg homes
on Harris Heights road. It will
cross the existing highway some
where near the South Coast mill,
and head towards Rainbow rock.
This new highway, between
Brookings and Gold Beach will
open up some of the most beaut
iful scenery to be seen anywhere
in the entire country.
The new line will run along the
coast for many miles, in an area
seldom seen by people now.
