that bill.
The Chamlier of Commerce Board of Directors dis
cussed the bill, and the methods to be used to help in
sure passage. It is obvious to them that the most import
ant single thing that we can do is to write to our state
senators, and assemblymen, requesting their support. We
ran also write to our friends in the valley, and to our
suppliers, soliciting their support.
A barrage of letters won’t help but convince thhe state
legislative body that we need that road—and desperately.
We have had editorial support from the Oregonian, and
from several other newspapers. Gov. Holmes has evi
denced his support of the matter, but we just can t afford
to sit back and wait—we need that road!
If nothing is done this year, if the bond issue doesn’t
pass, chances are good that on piecemeal basis, I lighway
101 wouldn’t be finished for at least 10 years—and possi
Bly longer. If it dots pass, there is every indication that
work could begin on the Pistol River Brookings re-al
ignment within a year, according to word received from
Dutch Williams, state highway engineer.
When the project is completed it would cut 8 miles
off the trip from Gold Beach to Brookings. Figuring
that on a 10 cents a mile passenger car operation, it would
mean a savings of 80c for every car making the trip.
Trucks would save a great deal more.
We would at this time, regardless of the outcome of
the bill, like to express our appreciation to the effort put
in on it by Sen. Dick Chapman, Rep. Carl Back, anti
the Oregon ('oast Association.
Again, let us point out two important facts. We need
that highway, anti we need it desperately. Ami finally,
we need help to push it across, anti we need it NOW!
