During the past few weeks there has been so much
hoop-de'do about the possibility of the state voting a $14,-
000,txx> bond issue to end the (»old Beach Brokings
bottleneck on highway io i , that we wonder how many
people noticed an item in the Pilot concerning the nuin
her of visitors that took advantage of 1 larris Beach state
park during the 1956 year.
Ever since the day we moved to Brookings, almost
three years ago we have maintained th.it the setting at
Harris Beach is unsurpassed in beauty anywhere in the
entire country—bar none.
The State I lighway department reported that I larris
Beach is visited by 140,000 people every year. That,
friends, is a lot of people. The thousands that camped at
the recently expanded 1 larris Beach camp site aren’t in
cluded in the figures handed down by the I lighway de
partment.
It can lx* assumed, of course, that there is a lot of local
traffic included in that 140,000, because the people liv
ing in Brookings figure that 1 larris Beach is a pretty
nice place to visit too.
*’ However, it also follows that a great many of tour
ists, probably from every state in the union t(x>k a good
look at Harris Beach. We’re sure they left Brookings and
Oregon with a very high opinion of our beauty spot, and
we’re also sure that they’ll tell their friends about it too.
The number of visitors to the park has been rising
each year— and wc feci safe in assuming that it will con
tinue to rise as the word gets around.
