W ork has been started on th e
new forest access road up the
■Chetco River, according to Willis
E. Ragland, district ranger a t
Brookings. A contract for con
struction of .85 miles of road and
two perm anent-type bridges w as
aw arded to the Lillebo C onstruc
tion Com pany of Reedsport, O re
gon, in Jan u ary .
Initial w ork on the project is
on the U pper Mill Creek bridge
near the end of the present C oun
ty road. This will be a treated
tim ber trestle 126 feet long w ith
pre-cast concrete caps and beams,
and concrete deck and curbs. The
second bridge will cross the C het
co River at the end of the road
project and will be a concrete
pre-cast girder stru ctu re 300 feet
long. The bid price on the project
was $221,499 00.
At a public hearing held at
Brookings Ranger Station May 17,
1956 this project was presented
and received favorable comment
from local governm ent and indus
trp representatives.

section to the vicinity of the ju n c
tion of the South Fork Chetco
River w ith the m ain fork is being
b uilt by the South Coast L um ber
Com pany of Brookings under the
term s of a cooperative agreem ent
w ith the Forest Service. This sec
tion has been on the planed sys
tem of forest roads for several
years but sufficient appropriated
funds have not been available to
aw ard contracts for its construc
tion, The South Coast Lum ber
Com pany has tim ber holdings in
the vicinity of the South Fork
Chetco River and they w ere w ill
ing to p articipate in the cost of a
w ater-grade road to avoid the

the cooperative agreem ent as soon
as construction has progressed to
the point w here travel is safe.
