Union Oil Company
Changes Ad Plans
tinue to use an advertising m ed
ium w hich is app aren tly becom-
ing offensive to m any of our cus
tom ers and prospects and w hich,
in the opinion of some experts,
represents a hazard to them.
Union Oil Company of C alifor
nia, one of the nation’s largest ad
vertisers, has cancelled all bill
board advertising and will in
crease substantially its new spaper
cam paigns in both dailies and sel
ected weeklies, according to Reese
H. Taylor, chairm an of the board.
Among th e weekly new spapers
selected to carry Union Oil’s ad
vertising in 1957 is the Brookings-
H arbor Pilot.
“Two factors w ere of prim ary
concern to Union Oil in reaching
the decision to abandon billboard
advertising,” explained Mr. Tay
lor.
“F irst is the traffic hazard
w hich a great m any experts have
indicated billboards tend to in
crease.
“Second is an apparent and
growing resentm ent on the p art of
m any people and residential com
m unities to obscuring th e beauty
of our n atu ra l landscape w ith this
type of advertising.
“As a com pany serving the
m otoring needs of the general
public, it simply did not make
good sense for Union Oil to con
"T herefore we cancelled all bill
board advertising. The money we
have been «spending annually for
this type of outdoor advertising
w ill now be used to increase our
new spaper advertising cam paigns.
In an other unprecedented pol
icy move, Mr. T aylor revealed
Union O il’s plans for 1957 include
use of an im pressive list of over
400 selected w eekly new spapers
in the seven w estern states.
“ We are initiating this test cam
paign in the w eeklies because we
believe such new spapers in the
west are thoroughly read and are
an effective m edium to reach a
large portion of the m otoring
public.
“ Weeklies will be used to sup
plem ent our com pany’s ad v ertis
ing in those areas w here Union
Oil has service stations or m ark et
ing outlets and w hich are not
covered by daily new spapers.
“Use of w eekly new spapers is
as m arked a change in U nion’s
advertising policy as is the deci
sion to abandon billboards. We
are confident such changes in
policy will prove efective.”
