Tues days meeting was held for the purpose of answering these complaints. It seems that at neither one of these meetings the people of our city were represented by their elected officers. The “hot potato” of objections was passed between the city engineer, the city attorney, and low and behold, the top man on the totem pole, the consulting engineer. E n tered as second-class m a tte r a t the postoffiee at Brookings, Ore All admittedly justified objections to the reassess ments were shruged off by the council and mayor by simply ref ¿ring them to the “Top Dog,” the consulting Ray Pisarek, Joe Murphy engineer. This man had only to shrug his shouldeis, Editors and Publishers look blank, and say, NO. Thus the people of this city SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Y ear in Advance (in C urry C ounty) ......... To be specific, one of the parties objecting to their unfair assessment, was upheld earlier in his beliefs >> The last two city council meetings indicates some three of the council, and even the high and mighty, CONSULTING ENG,INKER, stated it was one of the one besides the duly elected hotly of officials runs the lots that could not k serviced in the same manner as the city of Brookings. Thursdays meeting was held for the M arch 7. 1946, under an Act of M arch 3, 18<9 WHO RUMS THE CITY? others. According to the firms ow n plans anti sjx-cifk.!- tions, which incidently was voted upon by the people as the plans for the sewer system, these same consulting en gineers stated, . . . that no system but the gravity fl >w system of sewage disposal would be used. Now. the song has a different tune. Pumps and complicated changing of existing plumbing will have to be used by a few to help, as one councilman stated “pay for the rest of the system.” Why a few, who had justice flaunted in their face and the right to appeal to their governing bodv made a mockery, have to pay more than their share of a SPEC IAL assessment is a little puzzling to figure out. The city council, mayor, and the highly paid city- officials, plus the consulting engineer, to a man, contend that thgy made no mistake in setting up the various as sessment districts. It is our con tension that anyone can make a mistake. The rights of a minority group should he considered by the governing body of the city, not by the cop.suit g “ANYONE.” Who runs the city.' LET'S ALL SHAKE ON IT . . . It’s all over hut the shouting and the pushing of pea nuts by the losers down Main street. The election this year was one of the hardest fought, and bitterly u*n- tested that we remember, especially on the state wide and local level. In winding it all up we would like to k the first to call for a round of band shaking. In other words—lets WONDERFUL People of Brookings IN YOUR TRUST IN ME FOR MAYOR OF OUR CITY IT IS AN HONOR AND PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU — C. F. "FELL" CAMPBELL all be friends again. Politics in this country are unique in many ways, but the happiest note about them is the general ability to forgive and forget the name calling, and hair Pu ‘ing. Democrats and Republicans become just “neighbors again—and that is just the way we want it. Again— regardless of the heat of the campaign—the only right thing to do is to turn to your recent antagonist and pump his hand up and down.
