The Brookings-Harbor Bruins
wound up a w inning season and
their first season Friday nightin
th e rain, dum ping Gold Beach by
a 13-7 count.
Coach Doug M acFarlane and
his charges proved that the ear-
lier victory over th e P anthers was
no fluke. He proved th a t the
Brookings team had come a long
way in the short tim e since foot
ball was initiated in the school
here. The Bruins ended the sea
son w ith a won three, lost two
record—far b etter than expecta-
, tions, and even b etter than most
season wishful thinking.
The gam e F riday night was a
good one, interesting to watch,
despite a to rren tial dow npour in
the second half, coupled w ith hail
in abundance and a wet m uddy
field.
The P anthers started right
down the field, stringing together
five first downs w ith Mike Melen
dy and Bob P arro tt knocking off
yardage in five yard chunks But

Brookings put a h alter on the
drive w ith halfback Je rry Fox in

line, and dashing down the side
lines fo’- 70 yards to the Gold
Beach 30.
A couple of plays later Ron
Lane pitched a perfect strike to
Fox, who caught the ball on the
four and stepped over to score the
first Brook TD. Ron McCabe
ploughed over for th e ex tra point.
The first q u arte r ended shortly
after that, w ith Bob P arro tt again
running Gold Beach out of a hole.
However, Gold Beach was for
ced to p unt to the Brook 25, and
the Bruins took off on an o th er of
th eir patented razzle dazzle dou- i
ble reverse pass play, th a t nearly
scored for them in the Eagle Point
tilt. A fter th e reverse Lane took
th e ball and flung it 40 yards
dow nfield to a w aiting Dave
Moore, who was all alone. He
sped to the Gold Beach 5 yard
line w here he was hit from be
hind. fum bling, w ith the P an th ers
recovering.
Gold Beach got out of the hole
w ith a run by P arro tt, but the
ensuing punt was blocked neatly
by A1 Pate, who recovered near
the Gold Beach goal line. McCabe
took the ball to the four, but Fox
fum bled iust as he w as about to
cross the goal on th e next play,
w ith Gold Beach again saving
them selves. Brookings was again
approaching the end m a rk e r w hen
the half ended.
The tn ird q u a rte r started off
w ith a neat note far the Brooks,
w ith a Lane pass to Je rry A nder
son gained 30 yards. Lane follow- ,
ed w ith i 10 yard run, but a fum- '
ble gave th e P an th ers the ball
again. The rains came, and the
players slogged through the m ire .
for the rest of the contest.
Brookings second score cam e j
late in th e th ird stanza when lit
tle McCabe took off around end
for 35 yards, his legs pum ping
like pistons The pass try for the
ex tra point failed.
The gam e w ent on in th e rain
and hail throughout th e fourth
q u arte r, n eith er team getting any
advantage, due mostly to fum bles
and penalties.
W ith only 31 seconds left Gold
Beach m anaged to score from the
one on a short ru n A pass play
netted th e e x tra point. And the
game ended following th e Gold
Beach kick off.
The Brookings-H arbor team had
w hipped Gold Beach 14-0 in th eir
