The TRR is geared to a c ntinu-
ed rise in population: economic
prosperity and higher living stan
dards as reflected in a continued
rise in gross national product; and
expectations of peace b ut continu
ed m ilitary preparedness.
One of the most fundam ental
assum ptions is that population of
the U nted States will be 210 m il
lion in 1975 and 275 n Ilion in
year 2000 as contrasted to an esti
mated |65 million in 1955 'h is
is an estim ated increase of 67 per
cent for year 2000 above that of
1955. but the trend is about the
same as prevailed during the first
half of the T w entieth Century,
Gross national p ro d u ct—the to
tal national output of goods and
services- is estim ated to increase
from 365 billion dollars in 1952 to
630 billion in 1975 and 1.200 bil
lion in 2000. Although this would
be an increase of 229 percent
from 1952 to 2000, this trend also
is about the same as the actual
rate of increase over the past 50
years.
I w onder w hat Brookings will
look like in year 2000. T hat isn't
so far aw ay—only 44 years. Our
kids will be in their prim e of m a
tu re life in year 2000.
