too, were not encouraging. I ie believed that “eventually
a road would connect Bnx,kings with South Central Or
egon—but it is a few years off.
Action is taken by the I ligliway Commission main
ly through the demand of the states citizens. The only
way any action would be forthcoming would be to be
gin sounding the bass drums. We are convinced that we
can’t do it alone—we need help from the vallev. Let’s
start looking eastward, and begin laying our plans.
The Chetcf ) small boat harbor could be just the lever
we need in obtaining inland support—but let’s go after
it.

THE BIG BASS DRUM
A goodly number of people—including professional
foresters, mining enthusiasts, and just plain Sunday dri
vers have traveled into the “valley’’ this summer without
going into California.
They have taken various routes, over roads of sorts,
usually the upper Chetco Road, and then to Selma, or
O Brien. It isn’t easy- but it has been done a number of
times.
Some facts are apparent. We reali; that it is but
56 airline miles between Grants Pa* and Brookings,
while the driving distance at the pr sent time is better
than double that.
\\ e know other things. We know that mining in
terests in the vicinity of Vulcan Peak now haul Chrome
into Brookings, and then over the present route into
Grants Pass We know that others concerned with our
low grade ores would think it economically feasible to
begin mining operations in this region if transportation
to a railhead were available.
We are positive that the proposed Chetco River
mouth harbor will stimulate interest from people in the
valley, who are week end fishermen.
We kin >w, finally, that if we sit here waiting for the
State I lighway Commission to make the initial move on
a road through to the vallev we may be waiting quite
a spell. Earl. er conversations with Rep. I larris Ellsworth
