LESMEISTER AGENCY Phon t 17,11 Brooking« W ithout doubt, B e n j a m i n F ranklin ha« been the source for more anecdotes and sto n es th a n any oth er g rea t A m erican w ith the possible exception of A braham Lincoln. A t any rate, there is one told of the early colonial inventor; printer, and diplom at which has alw ays been a favorite of mine becuse the lesson implied is ju st as applicable today as it was then. It seems th a t F ranklin had a close friend of long standing whom he weekly invited to nis home for an evening of chess. Invariably, though, the two elder ly gentlem en during the evening would g et involved in argum ent about som ething or oth er as older men w ith fixed ideas are wont to do. F ranklin, being the more brill iant man and the mort adept in the use of language would em erge the victor practically every' in stance. One evening a fte r a p arti- cu laily hectic verbal battle during which F ranklin upset his compan J ion's logic a t ©very turn, th? friend, a Q uaker, ro-e in a hurf and asked for his h a t and coat. Going out the door, he turned ! to his host and softly said, “Ben- ) jam in, tonight thou hast won an I argum ent but in doing so h ast lost a friend”. And he spoke truly, for never again did he en ter i F ran k lin 's home. The sto ry is typical of m any an antic of today.
