increased rate structure. The hearing is to k held next
Tuesday, July 17 at Salem.
A group of Brookings citizens, spearheaded by At
torney Ed Ackley, have gone ahead on the assumption
that k-eause of the p<x>r service on the part of the phone
company, increased rates at this time aren’t justified. At
a recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce board of
directors the group agreed to writ? a letter condemning
the local telephone service. Almost to a man the direc
tors were critical of the service.

Ackley and his citizens group proposes to go fur
ther. They want the West Coast Phone Company to put
in an exchange in Brookings instead of weeping the ex
change in out-of-state Crescent City.
FRIDAY, JULY 13th
To Saturday, JULY 21st
Looking at it from the phone company viewpoint
we can see where they, much as any other business, are
having difficulty providing service in such a rapidly
growing area. However, judging from the harshness
ol the complaints—and we’ve heard many, perhaps rais
mg the rates until service is bettered wouldn’t k- a g< x»«.!
idea.
As far as moving the exchange to Brookings goes it
would k an excellent step—providing J 7 Ktter the
service. W e would like to hear the phntie company’s
\ lews on it at any rate.
W e are sincere in advocating die wntrng of letters,
both pro and con on the subject to Ackley, or directly
to the P .l ’ C.— or to the Pilot. We think that if enough
{K'oplc are critical of the service, perhaps we can get
action.
