At the present time, C urry
County s ag ricu ltu ral income,
from the production of lily bulbs
exceeds $600.000.00
Since the close of W orld W ar
II the trend has been from many
sm all grow ers to a few, larger,
more efficient operations in this
ag ric u ltu ral industry This trend
has been greatly influenced by
increased production costs, caus
ed by higher wage rates, taxes
and land values. x
LAND USE
The com m ittee felt th a t all
the available land in the so u th
ern end of C urry County suitable
for lily bulb production w as now
being used. F u rth e r expansion in
acreage would have to lie made
on u nsuitable land. Anyone try
ing to get into the bulb industry
in this a re a should take this into
consideration. The com m ittee
felt th a t it would be unwise to
encourage any fu rth e r expansion
of the bulb industry due to the
lim ited am ount of adaptable
land and available w ater th a t
would be neoesary for irrigation
This com m ittee feels th a t the
bulb in d u stry at the present
is q u ite well stabilized and this
stability should be m aintained.
SIZE O F U N IT : An econom
ical sized unit at the present
tim e is 16 acres. F our acres of
which should be planted to bulbs
each year. A th ree year rotation
should be followed. Bulbs should
follow a sod crop. P lanting
should yield 25,000 com mercial
bulbs per acre. Two and one-half
acres usually yields 50,000 com
mercial bulbs, and furnishes
planting stock.
M ECH A N IZA TIO N : The bulb
industry is p retty well m echan
ized. As m any operations as poss-
I ible a re now being done by mach-
ines. The F arm Im plem ent Com-
panics are doing considerable
am ount of research to perfect
better m achines and they are be
ing tried by the grow ers as fast
as they come along. Phis trend
is expected to continue in the
future.
Some of the com m ittee m e m
bers felt th at perhaps th? col
lege should conduct som e re
search in th is area on grading.
Much of the grading m ade av ail
able through private research is
too big and expensive for grow
ers in this area. The m achines
are not econom ically p ractical
for the size enterp rise the grow
ers to operate.
M echanization is necessary in
speeding up the handling o per
ations as well as reducing costs.
G rading is the one place w here
this m echanization is lacking.
W EED CO N TRO L: The com
m ittee would like to see more
w ork done w ith selective type
weed spray. They recognize th at
much w ork has already been
done by the college and private
industry, but they would like to
see this w ork increased and com-
tinued. D em onstrations and tria l
plots should be established in the
county and the resu lts should be
m ore conclusive than just killing
the weeds. T his com m ittee would
like to have th e college m aintain
trial plots continuously, testing
new chem icals as fa st as they
come along and not only ch ?ck
for weed control, but effect on
soil organism s and long tim e
effect on the lily bulb production.
It is felt th a t m any grow ers are
using these new chem icals based
on research conducted on diff-

RO TA TIO N : R otation is an
absolute necessity to good bulb
growing. However, at the pres

F E R T IL IZ E R : The com m ittee
feels th a t nearly every bulb
grow er in C urry County uses a
different fertilizer. It advises
th a t w ork conducted by Dr.
