If th ere is anyone in th e sta te
of Oregon who isn’t terrib ly un
happy about his 1955 sta te in
come tax, I am w illing to w ager
th at he is eith er unemployed or
has so much money th a t he
can ’t keep trac k of it all.
W ithout doubt this last tax
raise just about tak es all aw ards
for arousing t ay payers interest.
C ertainly if it is tru e th a t one’s
ears burn when someone is ta lk
ing about him. this sta te should
have the h o ttest-eared collection
of legislators ever corralled in
one sta te capitol.
As evidence of ire aroused,
th ere is even a movement under
way to publicize the nam es of all
legislators voting for the tax in
crease w ith the object in mind
of removing them all from
office. It would be wise, how
ever, for such ag itato rs to pro
ceed cautiously. A fter all, th e
very sm all m inority who opposed
the increase should indicate th a t
th e re w asn't much argum ent for
th at side of tlie issue.
V oters m ust alw ays rem em ber
th at the leg islatu re is faced not
only w ith the problem of spend
ing the ta x p ay e rs’ money as
directed but it also must see to
it th at money is available w ith
which to pay the bill. The c iti
zenry, perhaps, should lie more
concerned w ith the m anner in
w hich th e ir money is fx'ing
spent. They should be certain
they are g ettin g th eir m oney’s
w orth.
The leg islatu re is today being
b la m 'd for an act which w as
unavoidable. It u nfortunately,
was in the position of a husband

tastes. All she is interested in

tomorrow tak e care of itself.
The state leg islatu re tried to

th eir constituents. At the sam e
tim e they had to find the funds
w ith which to pay the bills. They
could not risk providing th e se r
vices dem anded and then having
th e people in a referendum des
troy the sources of paying for
those n?rvlces. As a result they
w ere forced to increase a tax
which w as already in existence.
W ith o u r population growing
by leaps and bounds, I can see
jlittle hojx' for a decrease in
taxes O ur duty is to insist th at
the money he wisely spent,
ra th e r than punishing our legis
lators for m erely paying our
hills.
