Bv CLIFFORD P. ROWE
Goodness only knows I try
very much to keep a youthful
point on views. In fact, for the
middle-ager that is one of the
most popular methods of keeping
on the "young" side of the fence.
Just to be able to say "I can
see why a youngster feels that
way or why he does what he does
seems to provide a certain a-
mount of insurance against slip
ping into th? darkness of the
"forgotten generation."
Nevertheless, at times it be
comes rather difficult to main
tain such an attitude. Take snow
for an example. I can still re
member, as if in a dream, when
as an early grade-schooler, I
would shout with glee at my
first glimpse of a lazily falling
snowflake. Yes, I can remember
—but for the soul of me I can t
remember why. I fail utterly to
see how anyone could get any
joy out of this routine disturbing
and practical joking Mother
Nature.
Twice already this year, I
have awakened to find the
ground covered with this milk-
white curse for vehicular and
pedestrian traffic. And on neither
occasion have I noticed anyone
enjoying it. Perhaps if I lived
in an area where the snow didn’t
immdiately turn to soup, J could
si?e some sense in it.
Youngsters could then get out
sleds or even take up sharp-
-hooting exercises on fancy hats.
But in this area th? sleds would
have to be equipped with out
board motors and the snowballs
in waterproof sacks.
So as I look around at my
friends, young and old alike, I
fail to find’any evidence of glee
or exhilaration as a result of
these sudden wet blankets. And
as I slip, slide, splash, and then
plunge into unsuspected snow-
covered troughs of water, my
only consolation is that I have
plenty of suffering brethren for
company.
I don’t Know what the almanac
has in store for the rest of the
winter; certainly I have not got
ten around to interv iewing a cat-
ei pillar yet, but I for one sin-
serely hope that the elements
will soon be "fresh out” of snow
at least for us west of the Cas
cades. For those in high and dry
eas’ ?rn Oregon, I can only wish
rha- they get all of ours. Th?
stuff in which we are flounder
ing would be manna for their
winter wheat. Here it serves no
earthly purpose.
