The Brookings Council got
held up Tuesday night in their
efforts to set a d ate for the sew
er bond election. They had an
ordinance all set to go, which
presum ably would have put the
election date in F ebruary, but
w ere unable to pass it because
of a legal question on an earli«^
ordinance.
Two ordinances related to the
sew er system w ere passed, while
two w ere held up. probably until
next T hursday night until cer
tain p arts of it could be checked
on.
They did pass O rdinance 81,
which in effect, set forth the
declarations of intentions of the
city in regards to plans, specif
ications and m ethods of having
a sewer system.
They also passed O rdinance
82, which established th eir in
tentions to m ake a sewage dis
posal plant and system , and
the imposition of charges are
previously reported, w ith 50 per
cent going into th e sinking fund
for exclusive use in th e tr e a t
m ent plant, and th e o th er 50
percent for ad m in istratio n , the
pum ping stations, etc, on the
basic charge of $2.00 sur-charge
and 70 cents service charge
w ith the levy to begin a fte r the
first of the year.

change the existing ordinance on
licensing businesses in the city.

Mrs. Payne was appointed

1917, during the first W orld W ar

fourth-class one. It was then
located across the highway from
w-here it is now, as w as also the
big general store.
Wh?n the
highw ay was built in 1925, the
store and Post Office moved to
the N orth side ot the road, but
the Post Office w as in an old
building which has since been
torn down.
It became a Third-Class office
July 1, 1944 and has gained
steadily eviery year since the
growth of the area. The resi
dents of the com m unity fought
an attem p t to m erge it w ith
Brookings last Spring, as they
w anted th eir own Post Office in
the com m unity
