As required by law th e C ounty
C ourt drew up a ju ry list a t the
beginning of this year, totalling
nam es from various portions
of the County. P roportions w ere

On the ju ry list 129 nam es are
those of re sid e n ts of th e Brookings
H arbor area. R eg istratio n rolls
show th a t th e precin cts of this
area contain ap p ro x im ately 40%
of t h e .t oun y s registered voters.
Gold R each-W edderburn w ith 22%
of the reg istered v oters was rep-
resented on th e list w ith 63 nam es,

the co u n ty ’s voters, had 58 nam es

„
« n the list. As any one can tell
:
' vou. and we w ould have been m ost
g» w illing to tell you if you had
taken th ? trouble to ask, this list
was prepared in accordance w ith
th? le tte r and spirit of the Law.
T here is not now. and th ere has
never been, to o u r knowledge, any
atte m p t to prejudice justice in
’his C ounty by rigging or fixin
jury lists.
It is th e d u ty of th e C ounty
C lerk to type th e nam es on th<‘
list on se p a ra te pieces of p apar
in d 'to put these nam es into a box.
Between 10 and 20 days before
the beginning of any court term ,
thv County C lerk, in the presence
of the Sheriff, shakes the box up
and draw s 31 nam es from the
box The nam es so draw n are the
jury panel.
The C lerk and the S h eriff advise
us that this is exactly w hat w as
done for this te rm of court. If all
the nam es draw n had happened
to be from th e B rookings-H arbor
area, th a t panel as draw n w ould
still have been th e legal panel and
these ju ro rs would have b w n su m
moned for duty.
The C ounty C ourt, the Sheriff
and the C ounty C lerk have been
injured by th e insinuation of
fraud contained in y o u r ill-advised
'ditorial. W’v req u est an apology
and we fu rth e r request a full and
prom inent publication of t h i s
letter.
Yours truly,
