doubt, the friendliest people in th e country. TTiis ce rtain ly was
shown to us em p h atically d u rin g o u r first week in this* com
m unity. Everyone has gone out of his w ay to w elcom e us
h e re . . . and we a p p reciate it sincerely. It is a nice feeling.
E specially w as th a t page w elcom ing announcem ent in
last w eeks issue a revelation. W e d id n ’t know about it u ntil
lie I ,is t m inute, alth o u g h we w ondered w h a t M rs A kers was
doing so secretively. W hen we re ad o v er (he announcem ent,
and saw how the e n tire business com m u n ity had signed th e ir
n am es Io it we w ere sim ply overw helm ed. It is th a t spirit of
co operation of civic pride, and of g enuine friendliness th a t
m akes B rookings a town of which to point to w ith pride W e’ve
sent out m any copies of o u r first issue to friends and relativ es
sc a tte re d over the co u n try , and you can bet y o u r last d o llar
they a ie going to read th a t p ag e too, and also glow w ith approval
a t the sp irit shown.
We w ant at this tim e to th an k M rs. A kers for th e u n tir
ing w ay she has helped us get s ta rte d in o u r new en terp rise. She
is a re m a rk ab le w om an, and a courageous one for having
c a rried on so well d espite som e tru ly had breaks. She considered
at length before tu rn in g ovei th e reins of the P ilot to us,
because she w anted to be su re she w as doing th e right thing
in the best in tere sts of the com m unity. W e hope to ju stify th a t
faith .
We are sm all tow n people ourself, by choice. W e realize
th a t th e h ea rtb eat and lifeblood of a hom e tow n new spaper is
new s about th at town. T hat m eans new s about you, y o u r friends,
y o u r businesses, clubs and churches. T hat is the sort of news
w e w ant to fill the colum ns of the P ilot. H ow ever, we need th e
roo|H»ration of each of you to do it. W e c a n ’t be everyw here at
once, and we c a n ’t print news unless we know about it. T h a t’s
w here each of you fit in. Keep us inform ed, and w e’ll fill the
pages w ith good local news. Then w e’l, have a good hom e tow n
new spaper.
In our ed ito rial colum ns we w ant to w rite w ith courage
and conviction. We w ant the courage to say w hat we think about
local and national governm ental 'a ffa irs , .ab o u t com m unity
e n te rp rise s and the like w ithout being fence rid ers o r m iddle
of the lo aders. But m ore im p o rta n t th an courage, we w ant
wisdom in those colum ns. B ecause w ithout wisdom, co u rag e is
m eaningless and harm ful.
Most im p o rtan t we w an t to give th e people of this
co m m u n ity a nw spaper of w hich they can be proud, and we’re
not going to let any th in g stand in th e w ay of th a t.

O regon is one of th e ce n te rs of th e S alm on industry’.
B oth com m ercial and p riv ate fisherm en in g re at num bers are
out a f te r th e ta sty fish. T he s ta te is proud of its ab u n d an t
S alm on resources, and has capitalized on every m eans of
pro m o tin g th a t fine resource.
However, it rem ained for a B rookings w edding cerem ony
to develop a new m ethod of adv ertisin g this glorious Salm on
to th e world.
