Cutting Daffodils
"H u n d red s of th o u san d s of K ing A lfreds a re shipped out of
Brookings, O re. in F e b ru a ry each y ea r, as cu t from th e open fields
overlooking th e o cean."
In th e crisp cool a ir of a F e b ru a ry m orn
S he w ended h er w ay in th e ea rly daw n,
To th e g ra y green fields w here D affodils grow.
And up and down th ro u g h row a f te r row
She ben t h e r back to each nodding flow er
And m any w ere th e buds she cut in an hour;
As sh e placed them so n ea t in h e r fat little hand
And fa ste n e d each bunch w ith a snug ru b b e r band.
•
A nd h o u r a f te r h o u r she toiled aw ay,
F o r she w orked alone in the field th a t day,
C o u n tin g each bud as she bent to th e g round
' i dl tw en ty -fiv e bloom s in h e r han d she found.
H o u r a f te r h o u r dow n each long row
S h e w as razzed along by th e song of a crow ;
C aw ! C aw ! C aw ! in his h arsh old w ay
And she had to ta k e it th e w hole long day.
N ext d ay rh e said, " I ’ll have tim e to p la y ”
B ut th e field w as ripe w ith buds next day,
And she h u rrie d along o ’e r m any a clod
O u t in th e field alone w ith h e r God,
S u rro u n d e d by b ea u ty on every side
h rom the rocky shore to w h ere m o u n tain s ride
High, high u p ag a in st th e su n lit sky,
S h e w ondered why m en should have to die.
In a b ea u tifu l, b e a u tifu l land as this,
W here th e sky and the seashore seem to kiss,
T h a t o’t r o th e rs ' m ista k es and p e tty s trife
T hese yo u ng m en m ust go and give th e ir life.
But down th ro u g h th e y ea rs it has alw ays been,
T h a t som e one m ust pay for a n o th e r’s sin,
Anti s u ffe r and die on th e b a ttle field
’ Till th e vanquished foe is m ade to yield.
As she c u t th e D affodils one by one
S h e noticed each face had tu rn ed to th e s u n —
H a v e we fo rg o tte n God in this land of o u rs
4 . u forgotten to bow as do th e flo w e rs?
B ut H e’s prom ised to h e a r if w e a re hum ble an d p ray
And tu rn from o u r w icked anti sinful w ay;
To forgive o u r sins if these w e’ll ban,
And to h e a r from heaven and heal o u r land.
