The Sunny Side of a Postponed Parade
In com m on w ith alm ost everyone, w e wen» sadly disap p o in t
ed w hen w e had to .postpone o u r Lily p arad e last week. But we
a re su re th a t this w eek’s celebration will be all th e g re a te r for
th e added suspense.
W e have heard, a couple of places th at the postfxinem ent
w a sn ’t really necessary, considering th e b ea u tifu l w e a th e r S u n
d ay Howeve, the w e a th e r S unday w as too la te to benefit the
ce leb ratio n . Eor th e Lily parade, th e re m u st he lily-decorated
flo ats, and th e lily fields would have been sadly dam aged by
p ick ers tra m p in g th ro u g h them w hile they w ere soaked.
And i t ’s w orking out p re tty well . . . . if th e w e a th e r m an
will co o p erate. All o u r hands will be here. In addition, th e carnival
w hfch co u ld n ’t get h ere for th e original d a te is here for this one.
And th e fields w hich had just a few bloom s last w eek a re loaded
w ith Lilies for us now.
So w e’re ready for Lily Blossom days . . . . and w e’re ready,
too, for a little cooperation from th e w e ath erm an . W ith his help,
th is should be one of o u r finest p arad es.
W hile w e r e the subject, we th in k we should dish out o u r
v ery nicest com plim ents to th e C hetco W ra n g lrs for th e ir fine

a truly, fine show. W e think i t ’s safe to say th e re will be rodeos
in Brookings from now on.
The Need for a City Charter
T h e s tre e ts of B rookings (about which we have said a
n u m b er of things in th e past, few co m p lim e n tary ) have tieen dry
am i du sty th e last few w eeks, w h enever th ey w e ren 't m uddy.
T h e C ity h as been ¡»owcrlcss to do an y th in g about it. since th eir
m ain ten an c e funds, w hich w ere never p le n tifu l, have been all
used up, pending the new fiscal year.
W hen new funds a re available, tin* city will probably oil the
stre e ts. But such a m easu re is only a stop gap one, really.
It all {xiints up again the need for th e paving project which
T he city h as pn»|x»sed to do, w hen it gets th e a u th o rity to float
a bond issue. And th a t in tu rn show s th e need to pass th e City
C h a rte r w hich will m ake o u r bonds acceptable, w hen it is voted
upon in A ugust.
Money spent on stop-gap m a in tain an ce is lost forever. T he
•a m e funds, put into a long ra n g e paving p ro jec t, can give
B rookings one of th e finest s tre e t system s in a city of its size.
