W e're h av in g q u ite a stru g g le
around th is office th ese days.
And th e s tru g g le ’s w ith E uery-
body.
It isn’t th a t we don’t like E v ery
body. P ro b ab ly we like him as
well as we do m ost people, and
on a M onday m orning like this
t h a t ’s not m uch. B ut Everybody
is giving us one heck of a lot of
trouble w ith th e things he says.
Seven people have been in here
today, and th ey all follow th e
sam e procedure. T hey throw open
the door, ta k e up a stan ce in
front of th e desk, and b u rst out
“ E verybody says
and then
they tell us w hat E verybody said.
Well, I guess t h a t ’s all right.
W e’re in tere ste d in w hat E v ery
body says. But w e’ve n ever m et a
m ore in co n sistan t p erfo rm e r in
o u r life. The first person who
told us w hat E verybody said
• ce rtain ly d id n 't h e a r him q u ite
as w ell as the fifth did. because
they seem to have arriv ed at
to tally d ifferen t view points as to '
ju s t w hat it is th a t Everybody
said.
O r m aybe i t ’s ju s t th a t E v ery
body is one of th ese persons th a t
has a d ifferen t tale for each p e r
son he m eets. F rom all w e’ve
h eard from th e people who tell
us w h at E verybody said, he seem s
to be a p re tty v ariab le person.
Come to th in k of it, we m ay not,
lik e him as m uch as we thought
we did.
Rut one th in g ’s sure. W e’re
w a itin g p atien tly for th e day he
opens th e door him self an d w alks
in. W e’ve been w a n tin g to find
out for q u ite aw h ile now just
w hat it is th a t E verybody said.
And w hen we do find out . . . .
w e’ll tell you.
There w as a tim e w hen the
F o u rth of Ju ly w as a p re tty hec
tic sort of celeb ration. All the
kids in th e neighborhood cele
b ra te d th e fo u rth w ith firew orks,
an d all th e p a re n ts p atched them
up on th e fifth . . . if they had
lived th ro u g h it.
These days, th e y 're being a
little m ore sensible about how
th e kids behave. But th ey still
h av en ’t done m uch about the p a r
ents. And this year, as on every
F o u rth , th e re 'll be trag e d y in
m any a hom e. T ra ffic accidents
on th e highw ays of th e nation
will ta k e a sta g g e rin g toll, as
m o to rists trav e l to c e le b ra te the
F o u rth .
I t ’s a glorious holiday, and w ith
out a doubt it should be c e le b ra t
ed. But th is F o u rth , th in k of the
consequences if so m ething h ap
pens to you . .. . and d riv e safely.
