So m any confusing elem ents are involved th a t even those w ell-in form ed in national affairs become bewildered. P rim arily to be decided is the m a tte r of com m unism . Is it a defin ite th re a t to the survival of th e nation o r is it m erely som e th in g to be shrugged off as fan ta stic and im possible? Some oi those who ta k e the form er stand, .particularly S en ato r M cCarthy, a re inclined to froth at the m outh and shoot at every shadow on the possibility th at it m ay be red. At the o th er ex trem e are those who ta stin g the sour grapes of political defeat in the last election become fa n atic in th eir attem p t to p o rtra y M cC arthyism as an ven g re a te r d an g er than com m unism . P ersonally, I can accept neither. In tern atio n al developm ents of the p ast ten y ears convince me that com m unism is an e v e rp re se n t m enace to any dem ocracv. Y< t 1 feel th a t the best defense against such a th re a t is th e preservation and s tre n g th e n in g of those very principles of h u m an ity which th com m unist seeks to destroy. M cC arth y ’s m ethods would in th e end d estro y those foundations of ju stic e w hich we w ish to pro tect. But even th o u g h his methods are rep u g n an t to th e American m ind,.m ost of us still have enough faith in th e d em o cratic processes to be co n fident th a t M cCarthy will ev e n tu a lly go th e w ay of ail those o th e rs whom histo ry records as having fo rg o tten in th eir de lusions of g ra n d e u r th at thev re p resen te d the people. P resid en t E isen h o w er faces a tough problem . He has my sym pa thy, but he also has my confi dence. It m ay not happen tom or row. but sooner o r la te r the pres - dent along w ith th e citizeniy which he re p re se n ts will cut to size th e s e n a to r w’ho has become too big for his britch es. This decline of th e senator, how- ever, m ust not com e as a result of the e ffo rts of those who oppose him because he fig h ts com m unism.
