Residents Asked To Ballot
On Future Azalea Festival

w’hich told th a t we had had 105
inches of ra in d u rin g 1953. And
it cam e, too. on th e heels of re ­
p o rts of six inch snow fall and
freezing w e a th e r in th e P o rtla n d
area.
I t ’s su rp risin g th a t we can have
th e heavy ra in fall we have here
and still have so m uch beautiful
w eather. O u r sto rm s sw eep in and
deluge us, and a few- days la te r
th e sun beam s down again.
Besides th a t, w e’re feeling a
little sm ug ab out o u r w e ath er,
anyway. Mrs. W ebb H ibbard tells
us she received a le tte r from a
friend in Los A ngeles th is week,
consoling us for all th e ra in and
storm s she had heard th a t we had.
Down th ere, she says th e y ’ve been
basking in S o u th e rn C alifornia
sun sh in e- a t ab out 30 deg rees—
for two weeks.
Although th e B rookings-H arbor
Lions club has had a 90 p er cent
average atte n d a n c e th e last year,
th e d irecto rs felt it should be 100
per cent and th ere in lies a tale.
At th e re g u la r bi-w eekly m e e t­
ing W ednesday. J a n u a ry 13, Lions
celeb rated th e b irth d ay of S ecre­
ta ry H erschel C haney and P re s i­
dent "P o p ” Reed at th e C hetco

su p p o rters of th e M arch of Dimes.
Local e n te rta in e rs will o ffer th e ir
services in an e ffo rt to boost th e
sw elling to ta ls to be used in th e
fight against polio.
The Lions a re re q u estin g ev e ry ­
one w'ho would like to ap p e ar on
th e show to com e out and join in,
also. A lready scheduled is the
q u a r te t from the B arbersh o p p ers,
com edians, L u th e r T isdale, and a
n u m b er of o thers.
Food and beverages will be
served all th ro u g h the evening,
w ith the profit from th e ir sales
going to th e drive. T here will be
no cover ch a rg e and no adm ission
charge.

Most local people seem ed re lu c ­
ta n t to let th e festival fade aw ay.
But d irec to rs of th e association
w ere som ew hat dubious as to how
m any would back up th e ir w ishes
w ith aid for th e festival.
S u p p o rters of th e festival p o in t­
ed out th e fact th a t th e Azalea
F estival is a unique in stitu tio n ,
and is one of th e loveliest ev en ts
held anyw here. An increasingly
larg e n u m b er of v isito rs are
draw n y ea rly to th e ev en t, w hich
has a ttra c te d th e a tte n tio n of
trav el groups as w ell as p riv ate
citizens.
But o th e rs pointed out th a t th e
A zalea F estiv al plus th e Lily
F estiv al w as ju s t too larg e a b u r­
den for th e people of th is city to
bear, and suggested th a t one be
dropped in favor of th e o th er. A n­
o th e r suggestion has been th a t the
Azalea F estiv al be tu rn e d over to
th e schools as a g ra d u a tio n cele­
bration.

p arin g this w eek for a m onth long
sa fe ty cam paign for Brookings.

p ared a full program of sa fe ty
ed u cation, w ith the cooperation of
s ta te and local police,( th e ir spon­
so rin g organization, th e R o tary
club, an d local business men.
P resid en t S to n e said the p ro ­
g ra m w ould be built aro u n d th ese
fa c to rs:
1. A check of safety devices
on local autom obiles, to be c a rrie d
o«,f «v»th th e cooperation of po­
lice an d Ed Dempsey, local a u to ­
m obile dealer. Police plan to set
up checking sta tio n s u n d e r w hich
th e horn, brakes, lights, etc., of
c a rs will be checked. T he lifesav-
ers will give th e c a r o w n er a red
o r g reen stick er, according to th e
condition of his his car.
E d D em psey will also give a u to ­
m obile checks at his g arag e to
advise local d riv ers as to w h e th e r
o r not th e ir c a rs are safe, d u rin g
th e cam paign. Lucky 7 boys will
also assist th ere.
2 A p ro g ram of bicycle ed u ca­
tio n for local kids, to be ca rried
o u t by th e club. M em bers of th e
g ro u p will advise y o u n g sters on
th e p ro p e r w ay to ride bicycles in
tra ffic , and will show them film s
on th e su bject.
3. T he erectio n of ban n ers at
th e ap p ro ach es of Brookings, a d ­
v ising tra v e le rs th a t "W e drive
safely in B rookings.”
4. D istrib u tio n and signing of
p led g es for safe driving, in co­
o p eratio n w ith the O regon J o u r­
n a l’s safety cam paign. M em bers
of the club hope to g et 1,000 sig ­
natures to the pledges.
P resid en t S tone said an all-out
effo rt would be m ade by th e boys
to reduce driving accidents in this
a re a . And th e club was g e ttin g
assistan ce from in tere ste d individ­
u als thro u g h o u t the area.
