We're Going to Have a School
T h e people of B rookings and H arb o r can be very proud, not
only of th e ir decision to butld a new high school lo r theii
ch ild ren , hut of the ov« rw helm ing m ajo rity th a t they gave th e
m easu re. T he eight to one m argin by which the m easu re passed
tells m ore convincingly th an an y th in g else how m uch we value
th e w e lfa re of o u r ch ild ren here.
And for the school board here, the vote m eans at least a
slig h t easing of th e difficult position in w hich they found th e m
selves. F aced w ith th e know ledge th a t th e schools we w ere
co n d u ctin g w ere su b stan d ard , anti th re a te n e d by the im pending
loss of school support funds w hich would have com pletely s h a t
tere d o u r financial p ictu re, they m ust have know n m any a sleep
less night as they aw aited th e decision of local voters.
W e th ink, perhaps, th a t this election w as m ore th an ju st a
vote co n cerning th e building of a s tru c tu re to house o u r children
w hile th ey acquired an education.
We th in k th e u n an im ity
showm by th e voters in School D istrict 17C w as a vote of confi
d ence in o u r th re e board m em bers, Mr. R ap raeg er, Mr. Golds-
b erry and Mr, C rum p, th e ch airm an .
C e rta in ly no school d is tric t to rn by dissension could have
yielded re su lts show ing such u n an im ity as w as shown in this
election. And we feel we owe a vote of th an k s, as m em bers of
th is com m unity, to th e m en who have shepherded th e plans
w hich have m eant so m uch to o u r youth. W G P
We're Asking For a Census
T h e recent request by th e B rookings C ity Council for a m id
te rm census of this city re p re se n ts m ore th a n expanded city
p rid e. It Is a very im p o rta n t m a tte r to th e city, financially, as
w ell.
N orm al censuses are ca rried out every ten years, w ith th e
last re g u la r census here held in 1950. And. as any local citizen
could tell you, a lot has happened around here since 1950
A larg e p art of th e city 's funds come from s ta te tax funds,
p o rtio n ed to the ineor|H»raled cities of the s ta te aeeording to
th e ir population. B r o k in g s has been receiving h er sh are of
such funds according to th e 1950 census. . . and no one locally
is satisfied w ith th at am ount.
So w e’re asking for a new census, and all indications $re
th a t the s ta te will he glad to carry it out. However, only one
such census can he p erm itted , and the council is in a q u an d ry
as to w h e th e r to do it now o r w ait until we grow som e more.
But they think th e y ’ll do it now’. . . since the sooner we get
th e added funds, the e a sie r it will be to spend them .
N o one has any definite idea as to how m any people th ere
a re in B rookings. . . hut th e re a re m ore th an th e re once was.
And even if this didn’t help out th e financial end, w e’d still be
aw fully an x ious to know how m any people we have now. Not
th a t we like to brag. hut. . . w ell, i t ’s nice to know w e’re grow
