Our Badly-Needed High School
T he voters of this school d istrict will he asked next S e p te m ­
b e r fifteenth to approve a bond issue for the co n stru c tio n of a
new high school for the B rookings-H arbor School D istrict.
P ro b ab ly never before in o u r c ity ’s h isto ry have such facili­
ties been so u rg en tly needed. O u r grade school children have been
going to school on a half-day basis, and this com ing y e a r th e
high school stu d e n ts will join them . C lasses a re being held in
th e basem ent of an adjoining church, in a fo rm e r m otel, an d
a t one tim e negotiations w ere ca rrie d on to re n t a hotel lobby,
so d e sp e ra te are we for space for o u r c h ild re n ’s classes.
The double-shift system which we a re using is frow ned upon
by ed ucational au th o rities, and th e re p u ta tio n of B rookings-
H a rh o r schools is su re to su ffe r if such a p ra ctice m u st be
c a rrie d on. In fact, the d istric t is req u ired by s ta te law to ta k e
actio n to relieve th e double-shift burden, o r risk loss of recog­
n ition as a sta n d a rd school.
'Hus is the m ost vital m easu re to com e before th e v o ters
h ere in a long tim e T he w e lfa re of o u r children depends upon
ad e q u a te facilities for th e ir education. And w e hope th e v o ters
h ere will be sure to support them w hen i t ’s tim e to vote on th e
b o n d issu e .

That Highway Again
Up in Gold Beach, th e y ’re s till rin g in g a w elkin about th e
location of H ighw ay 101 th ro u g h th e ir very fa ir city, and its
su rro u n d in g s. In fact, th e y ’ve becom e so voluble about it th e
echoes are jH 'netrating c le a r down here.
All this noise is d istu rb in g o u r sleep, and o u r sleep is som e­
th in g that we do not v alu e lightly. H ow ever, w e’ll forgive them
th a t, it they'll perm it us to ra ise ag ain a few points alre ad y
m en tioned t>\ the S ta te H ighw ay C om m ission and m em bers of
th e L e g is la tu re s in terim highw ay com m ittee. T hese a re th e
points:
1. The S ta te Highway C om m ission still believes th a t this
highw ay is intended for the people w ho will tra v e l it. from both
Inside and outside of C u rry C ounty. T h ey ’re th e people w ho will
pay fo r it and trav el it, and no am o u n t of noise is ap t to m ake
th e com m ission change th e ir plans for th e benefit of th e s trip of
pro|M 'rty ow ners who will abut th e highw ay, and w ho hope
th ere b y to m ake a killing.
2, 1 h e C om m ission is u n d er no com pulsion to co n tin u e its
plans lo r the relocation through this area, if prices set by con­
dem nation ju ries rise to the point of ab su rd ity . T his co u n ty has
been h ere a long tu n e w ithout developm ent, and th e y ’d he w illing
to w ait u ntil th e y ’re su re we w ant it.
