Dewey Akers — Founder of the Pilot
T h is week m a rks the firs t anniversary o f the death of
D ewey A kers, the founder of the B ro o kin g s-H a rb o r P ilo t. I t was
on August 14, 1952 th a t Dewey died in a plane crash near the
C a lifo rn ia line.
The newspaper he founded has come a long w ay since the
day he started it, back on M arch 7, 1946, and the co m m u n ity
it serves has come a long w ay, too.
The success o f any newspaper and any c o m m u n ity are in e x
tric a b ly entw ined. Dewey b u ilt w e ll and so lid ly d u rin g his six
years, and the g ro w th of Brookings, we lik e to th in k , is due a t
least in part to the c iv ic p rid e and e n terprise o f the B rookings-
H a rb o r P ilot.
And we who are here now, c a rry in g on his paper a fte r him ,
w e can promise th is co m m u n ity th a t we w ill tr y to live up to
th e exam ple th a t he set, and th a t we w ill go on w o rk in g to
m ake th is paper w o rth y of th is com m unity, and th is co m m u n ity
the finest place there is to live.

Curry County and Highway 101
In the w ake o f the highw ay hearing held at Gold Beach last
w eek, there are a num ber o f things w hich can he said. B u t the
most apparent fact is th a t there can never be a highw ay loca
tio n th a t w ill satisfy everyone concerned.
T he people of the Gold Beach area w ho objected to the
plans of the S tate H ig h w a y Com m ission w ere undoubtedly sin
cere in th e ir apprehension. They envision a highw ay thro u g h
th e ir area, c u ttin g th e ir most valuable land in to shreds, and
s till closed to hx’al traffic. On th a t h ighw ay they foresaw a
stream of to u rists rushing th ro u g h C u rry C ounty, w ith never an
op|N>rtunity to stop and see the scenery, and. in c id e n ta lly , en
rich tin» p ro prietors o f hx’al businesses.
F rom what we heard at the Gold Beach hearing, we th in k
such fears are groundless. It is tru e th a t access to the highw ay
w ill be lim ite d to c e rta in points, and th a t it m ay he necessary
to some p ro p e rty ow ners to construct roads to those points, i f
they have not previously developed access to the highw ay. It
is also true that they are reserving large p a rts o f o u r coast
line to r state parks, in an e ffo rt to preserve its d is tin c tiv e
beauty.
Both policies are d icta te d by c e rta in facts, and n e ith e r of
them , we th in k , are d e trim e n ta l to C u rry C ounty. The people
o f this area are correct when they say a large p a rt of o u r
economy w ill ho based upon to u ris t trade in years to come And
there are tw o things th a t w ill bring the to u ris ts here. One is
the sate, broad, m a g n ific e n tly scenic highw ay the state proposes,
c lin g in g to the c liffs along o u r shore. And the o th e r is the
beaut> o f this coastline, unm atched anyw here on e a rth .
It is a sad com m entary th a t p riv a te developm ent of o u r
lands is o fte n d ic ta te d m ore by im m ediate p ro fit than long-range
p rotection of o u r one irre placahle resource, o u r scenery. I f you
doubt it. sou hut base to ru n on up 101, th ro u g h N e w p o rt and
the coast towns north, w here w hatever scenery they have is h id
den Ix’hind a ribbon o f m otels and tillin g stations.
And there is one th in g very certain, concerning th is country.
W hen 101 Ix'comes the kind o f a highw ay the state proposes,
th e n ' w ill not he a m ore (xtpular highw ay in the w est. We th in k
this highway w ill c a rry tra ffic th a t cannot even be envisioned
now
I'here w ill he to u ris ts th ro n g in g the citie s of G u rry Coun
ty. and there w ill lx» p riv a te businesses in p le n ty to take care
o f th e ir wants, hut those businesses w ill not be doing so to the
d e trim e n t ot our scenery.
l h e i e are tw o things necessary to the developm ent o f C u rry
County A highw ay, safe and pleasant to tra ve l, and the preser
va tio n of o u r m agnificent scenery
W ith those tw o th in g s as
sured. >ou couldn't keep to u ris ts out o f this co u n try. And the
S ta te Highway Commission, it stem s to us, does no harm to
C 'utty County in try in g to provide those tw o things, w ith its
