Yaquina Bay
Lighthouse Given
Execution 'Furlo'
LOCAL NEWS
Folks around Newport and Lin
coln County who view the ancient
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, standing
stark and deserted on the bluff,
as a m onum ent and link with the
historical past are going to have
to step up their promised plans
to finance its repair or see it torn
down as a m easure of safety to
the public.
The old lighthouse building,
which never was a lighthouse for
very long has been a Newport
landm ark since early in the
1870’s. It has served more as the
abode of “h a n ts” and ghosts and
as a trysting nook for the rom an
tic. w andering hand in hand along
the rhododendron-bordered lovers’
lane which led up the hill from
the beach and the town far be
low. Now it encum bers the Ya
quina S ta te P ark, is rickety,
storm -worn and unsafe.
The Commission told the Parks
Superintendent a long time ago
to tea r it down as it was a hazard
to the public. But the Lincoln
County folk got a stay of execu
tion. The Lincoln County His
torical Society promised, were it
given time, to raise the estim ated
$15,000 necessary’ to brace it up.
