vide the training and operation
base for the Southern Oregon and

crew of 28 men and th eir two
planes
As a result of this project, fire
control action from this smoke-
jum per base will be improved on
the adjacent O&C. national forest,
and private lands in addition to
the Oregon Caves N ational Monu­
ment.
Low bidder for »he improvement
of the Illinois Valley airport is
the R&M Construction company,
Roseburg, Oregon, and it is an tici­
pated that the contract will be
aw arded at an early date, accord­
ing to the regional forester.
Estim ated cost for the project
is $45,000, of which $25,000 is be­
ing contributed by the U. S. forest
service and the rem ainder by the
Civil A eronautics A dm inistration.

The D epartm ents of Interior,
[A griculture and Civil Aeronautics
adm inistration, of the D epartm ent
ot Commerce have entered into a
cooperative agreem ent which has
just been executed for the prepa­
ration and bitum inous surfacing
of the Illinois Valley airport near
Cave Junction, Oregon, according
to J. H erbert Stone, regional for­
ester, U. S. forest service, P o rt­
land, Oregon. A portion of the
land for this airport was origi­
nally donated by local residents,
Elwood and Amy Hussey, J. O.
and Naomi Seat, and O. K. and
Theresa Boram of Los Angeles,
Calif.
The airport, which has been
under development by the U. S.
forest service since 1939, is lo­
cated ad jacent to the Redwood
highway I U.S. 199), about 32
miles south of G rants Pass and
13 miles west of the Oregon
Caves National Monument. When
the planned im provem ents are
com pleted the runway, which has
good approaches, will be 75 feet
wide and 4,030 feet long; will ac-
