WE ARE NOW ENJOYING w hat has long been wanted.
Those th at have driven on the newly-oiled stre e ts of Brookings
will perhaps have experienced a joy th at comes from long wish
ing, long w aiting and at last realization.
How happy hom em akers m ust be, not to m ention the ta x
payers to actually see results accomplished. It has been m ost
difficult for everyone—this w aiting period.
The City Council is to be congratulated upon the speed and
apparent ease w ith which this job has been m aneuvered and be
gun. Nowhere is there an apparent “hitch.” It may be th a t
the “City Dads” have many a parental conflict am ong them
selves and within their group, but to the onlooker all is smooth
sailing, which only loyalty can accomplish. They have worked
long hours and in some cases neglected their businesses to give
tim e for this parental job. Mr. Arp, city inspector, has perhaps
born the blunt of the city street program . However, he does not
m ake final decisions until the council passes upon them .
He plays much the same role as the fem inine m em ber of the
family that forages forth in Brookings for a home to ren t or buy.
W hile her “b etter half' is busy “bringing in the bacon" she does
th e leg work. ^One consolation exercise is good for the figure)
and when she finds a fte r perhaps nays, weeks, or perhaps m onths
of search, a suitable place for her brood, fath e r then sails forth,
gives his OK, signs the check and takes too much of the credit
when showing oil to his friends. Mr. Arp. we, as citizens, will be
taking too much of the credit when showing the new Brookings
off to our friends. You must forgive us.
In exchange, perhaps, we will show our appreciation to you
and the City Council, who have m ade this program possible by
taking care of th at which has been provided for us.
We realize that this first application of the asphalt emulsion
on the surface will not stand up if cars and trucks are driven
w ith sjieed. “O ldsters” as well as youngsters, will be cautioned
to please drive as though they might be expecting a hole just
around the corner. True, It is a tem ptation to speed on streets
free of ehuekholes and dust, but if Brookings people are to have
the streets in good condition for any length of tim e they m ust
care for them.

in agreem ent with the President
on the subject of taxes. I feel
that we should m ake every pos-
sible effor to tak e in m ore than
we pay o u t—in other words, bal
ance the budget. Every penny
tii?t our governm ent runs in the
red —every penny of deficit- is
paid with w hat in plain term s
am ounts to printing press money.
T hat m eans m ore inflation. In
flation m eans devaluation of the
dollar Devaluation of the dollar
m eans that you can buy less with
the dollars you earn or the dol
lars you have saved. It seems
plain common sense to me that
we are m uch b e tte r off to pay for
governm ent out of income ra th e r
than to have both our savings
and our incomes devalued by def
icit financing. In other words, no
one, no taxpayer, will be ahead if
his governm ent borrows money
