Something to Knew And Think About By N. M. JONES The local parks with which our state has blessed us. are now get ting really beautiful. This just passed warm spring rain has done things no human hand could do to bring out the buds and blooms and lush greens. In the Azalea Park, shrub» are already in their prime with whites, yellows, oranges, and apricot, and all their intermediate shades. Here and there are the scented ceanothus whose azure blooms are so often slandered by being referred to as •‘California \\ ild Lilac,” and the specimen near the barbecue site is, pos sibly, one of the most perfect in the world. It should be well in bloom by this coming Sunday. Along the trails there’s a pro fusion of the more modest plan's with buttercups, violets, Spring Beauty, and many, many others and there’s elderberry shrub whose pure white umbrels are so heavy they hang almost to the ground. Harris Park, too. is getting ‘‘that way,” in its own distinctive manner and already proving to us that Winter is a thing of the past. The state has done much to improve this park. New toilets and a splendid water system has been installed but the keepers tell of some criminals, apparent ly grown-up ones, who evidently a favor to enjoy our parks and we 11 be doing a double favor for those of us who contact the trav eling public to invite them to slow down for just a few mo ments to enjoy them. too. Much of the beauty can be at tributed to Messrs. Tisdale and Dotson. We also realize that the various agricultural shows ami fair officials will be able to plan on continued finan cial aid and assistance from rac ing. Last year taxes on racing paid $368,094.88 to the general tax fund of Oregon, and another $365,600 went into a fund which helps make possible the counts ta.rs, Oregon’s State Fair, Pacific International Livestock Exposi tion and other agricultural shows of this state.
