vast $900,000,000 forest in d u stry
— leader in th e nation.
Included in th e research pro­
g ram are stu d ies on th e effects
of different logging m ethods on
soil and site p ro d u ctiv ity ; effects
of fires on forest soils; n u trie n t
re q u irem en ts of various w estern
conifers; m ain ten an c e of n u rse ry
soil fe rtility ; soils c lassific atio n s;
and problem s involved in th e m u l­
tip le use of fo rest lands— for
grazing, forage and forestry .
D isease problem s as th ey re ­
lated to soils will be in v estig ated
also.
E m phasis on one p roject
is on th e re la tio n betw een soil
p ro p e rtie s and th e o ccu rren ce and
sev e rity of tre e diseases.
