II had always wondered why so few fx*ople w ere willing to
give of their time and talent in the advancem ent of com m unity
enterprises. T hat is, I did wonder until I took the opportunity
to study the situation.
My research in the m a tte r brought out facts that not only is
such work done w ithout rem uneration but also th at in too, too
m any cases it does not even get appreciation. It seems that
th ere is always a small group of nothing-doers who are constant
ly on the alert in order to catch somebody doing more than
absolute duty demands. When they find such a one, they pro
ceed to give him a rough tim e which usually includes charges
of being a conceited prig or a busybody or a publicity hound or
a showofT, and so on to the end of the list.
Usually one lesson is enough for the beginner in such ac
tivities. Although he still realizes that there is work to be
done, he rapidly arrives nt the conclusion that someone else had
b e tte r do it. Once in a while a truly valiant one thum bs his
nose nt the yelping curs on the edge of the pack and goes on to
la'com e a valuable leader in the community. But the valiant
a re few.
Why th ere should be those who ridicule the efforts of the
few who are willing and able to work for the betterm ent of all
has always been one of the m ysteries peculiar to man. The
easiest conclusion to be reached is that those who jeer are en
vious ot the successful accomplishment which they are incapable
of achieving.
Dr. C harles Bradley, noted scientist of California In stitu te of
Technology, has a word of encouragem ent for those hurt by the
seem ing lack of appreciation, lie rem inds that “Any yellow dog
can bark at the heels ot tin* horse that is {lulling the plow.”

Fashions now flourishes because a
young woman was a half sue figure
and a camera fiend, and had enough
ingenuity to combine these two di-
