W E ARE AMERICANS
The cam paign is over! We the people have m ade our choice
for the man who will direct the destiny of our nation for the
next four years. lie is our Persident, irrespective as to w hether
w e w ere tor him or against him during the campaign. We are
all for him now. Therein lies the greatness and the stren g th of
o u r nation, our willingness to accept the will of the people as law.
T his is sacred to us.
’Phis condition does not prevail in m any other countries. Let
us takek a survey of the last 80 years of history. The political
regim e of all nations, except the British Empire, the Scandinavian
countries, Holland and Belgium have been overthrow n by force,
an unsuccessful rival seiging an opj>ortunity to raise an arm y
and gain power by force. O ur sister republics to the south of
us have had many internal revolutions, leaving th eir country a
seething condition of unrest and a sta te of poverty as the after-
m ath of internal strife. F o rtu n ately Am ericans will not tolerate
any such m ovem ents ami accept as sacred the verdict of the
people as final.
This is on»* of ft he great reasons why our nation during its
short period of history, less than two hundred years, has m ade
g re a te r progress than all the rest of the combined nations of the
world, many of them having thousands of years of history in
the past.
The defeated candidates gracefully subm it to the verdict ex
pressed at the polls and send messages of congratulations to
th e ir victorious rivals wishing them a successful adm inistration.
One of th<* finest m essages showing the Am erican spirit con
tained these w ords: "We subm itted the issue to the Am erican
people and their will is law.”
In this instance the cam paign had been what we call "a hot
one.” Both candidates were exceptionally clean, fine men. How
ever the unsuccessful candidate had been subjected to vicious
a tta c k s of every kind; the ideas they advocated w ere new for
th at tune, but most of ft hem have tieen enacted into law since
then. His greatness was shown by his message to his winning
opponent, acknowledging the basic American ideal The people's
will is law and their condition such that it is the envy of the
nations of the earth
E verything is not ideal, th at is true, but we do not have to
put guards around our people when they leave to visit other
countries. They are alw ays very willing to come back and if
they are not, they a re thrice welcome to stay away. If any dele
gation of our people goes to another country, we do not have
them guarded so they cannot com m unicate with the citizens
there. How m arvelous it is to come and go as you please.
T here is one evidence that proves America is the greatest
country on the globe. 'Phis is the evidence: Should we throw
down the bars and tak e off all restrictions on our im m igration
laws, the people by the millions, from o th er nations, would m i
g ra te here Millions of them are clam oring for an opportunity
to get to America
As far as national resources are concerned, they are as far
forw ard as we are. but unable to develop them because of one
form o r an o th er of absolutism . If they could adopt American
dem ocracy, they could be prosperous as well as we.
May (kxl continue to bless Am erica, for it is a blessing to
m ankind.

T he Chetco IV velopm ent proposes the construction of a je tty
a t the m outh of the river and the dredging of the basin to a depth
of from 12 to 15 feet of w ater at low tide.
The benefits to Brookings anil H arbor arising out of this de
velopm ent have been expressed to the Pilot as follows:
An all-year en tran ce from the ocean into the Chetco Basin
would be provided This basin would extend from the m outh of
th e river approxim ately to Tide Rock
A safe, adequate and calm w a te r anchorage would thus be
p resid ed for a large num ber of sm all craft. Such an anchorage
would entice alm ost all of the fishing fleet now operating between
E ureka and Coos Bay. Most of this fleet would m ake the Chetco
Basin its home port.
Canneries, warehouses and docks would be erected on the
the south bank of the basin to serve the fishing industry. O ther
industries, opertaed in connection w ith the fishing industry, would
move into this area.
Many of the owners of these fishing boats would build their
homes in this area. In fact, several of these boat owners are
living here now.
All of this w’ould mean th at th ere would come to Brookings
and H arbor a great new industry. It would mean more employ
m ent, more business and the expenditure of a large sum of
money. This would be new money to the area, money th at is
not being spent here now. It would be to our m utual benefit.
Everybody living here would share in this potential prosperity.
The Chetco Development could m ake this area the most pros
perous and populated area on the Pacific Coast, north of E ureka.
But this project does not end here. There are other advan
tages to be secured from this development. The Pilot shall dis
cuss these other advantages in la te r issues.
Does a substantial m ajority of the people who live in Brook
ings and H arbor desire th at the je tty be built and the Chetco
Basin developed? The Pilot would like to know’ the opinions, pro
and con, of the residents of S outhern C urry County on the pro
posed Chetco Development.
This is everybody’s business. L et’s have some public discus
sion. W rite to the Pilot and express your sentim ents. The Pilot
will publish all of the letters so received. In your lette rs please
stick to the subject, do not indulge in personalities and sign the
letter.

The election is over. The Am erican people have cast their
ballots. We have m ade our decision. We no longer stand inept,
dilatory and stupid at the crossroads. Now we are on the m arch.
To accomplish this we had to say “No” to the cherished hopes
of a g rea t American. Adlai E. Stevenson is a great and gallant
leader. It is to be regretted th at he could not have used his
talen ts in a b e tte r cause. He carried with him, on his back, the
Com m unists and fellow’ travellers and pinks who had infiltrated
into our governm ent and w ere selling us out to the Russians.
In his train w ere the five per centers and the thieves who were
robbing us. And, as if this burden w ere not enough, he had
H arry T rum an stru ttin g about on his w histle stops and implying
th at Stevenson was T rum an's boy.
As we have previously w ritten we again renew our question:
"How stupid can politicians g e t? ” When Com m unists and Com
m unist sym pathizers are called red herrings instead of red tr a it
ors by our President, when this m otley a rra y is placed in control
of high places in our governm ent, when Russia shoots down our
peaceful airplanes and, with im punity, imprisons our citizens,
dot's any hum an being in his right mind believe that, we are
going to take it lying down?
If today, in America or in the world, such a belief is prevalent
let those who so believe consider the results of our November
4. 1952, election. Let the ty ra n ts and dictators, abroad upon this
ea rth today, read of w hat has happened in the past to those
ty ra n ts and dictators who have attem pted to enslave America.
To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln. “You can’t fool us all the tim e.”
America once again has vehem ently declared to all who will
listen that the G reat E m ancipator was right.
Before ninety days have passe,! Dwight D. Eisenhow er shall
have been sworn in and e n te r upon his duties as our new’ P re si
dent. Once again there comes up from among us a great A m er
ican to lead us out of our adversity. Once again, in the m om ent
of our peril, we have chosen a great leader to guide us.
Ike Isenhow er shall be confronted w ith an awful responsi
bility. His fellow citizens, by a great m ajority, have named him
as the hum an instrum ent to bring about the accom plishment of
their hopes and demands.
And w hat does America ask of the Republican party and of
Ike. its leader? America says. "No m ore appeasem ent of Rus
s i a ” America declares. "Speedily end the Korean w ar w ith a
victory for our American aim s.” America commands, “Kick the
Com m unists and fellow travelers and pinks out of our govern
m ent.” America proclaims. "P u t the thieves in prison and clean
up our house.” America requests, "End the awful w aste of our
resources and our w ealth which for the past four years has
threaten,',! to impoverish us.” In the accom plishment of all of
this America shall become im patient if there is any evidence of
delay. Thus America has spoken, clearly, definitely and inex
orably.
When Adlai Stevenson, on election eve, sent his m essage of
congratulation to Ike Eisenhower, he came to what was his finest
m om ent. He said, in effect, th at even though we m ight be
divided in our political beliefs we are all Americans and, in the
dedication of ourselves and our saccred honor to the perpetuation
of w hat we believe in and w hat we stand for, we, all of us. stand
shoulder to shoulder in unbroken ranks.
N inety years ago. alm ost to the day, America proclaimed
that this country could not exist half slave and half free. To
m ake America free our ancestors paid an awful price It has
been given to us, we who have inherited th at freedom th at our
forefathers paid for, to say to the world. "We can not exist half
slave and half free.” And we do not intend to become slaves.
If. once again, it shall become necessary for us to pay the price
of hum an freedom on this earth we hum bly bow our heads before
our God and pray to Him th at He shall sustain us as we pay
the costs
