E very w in te r stro n g w inds do
considerable d am ag e to forests
by u p rooting trees, blowing off
tops and b re ak in g branches. Less
s p e c ta c u la r th an th e wind d a m ­
age but c e rta in to follow is the
secondary d am ag e done by fungi
and insects w hich a tta c k th e in­
ju red tre e s and w eaken them
still fu rth e r u n til they die. One
of th e m ost d e stru c tiv e insects is
a tiny b ark beetle w hich burrow s
u n d er th e b ark w here it m akes
g alleries so nu m erous and e x te n ­
sive th a t th e tre e is finally girdled
and succum bs. N orm ally, healthy
living tree s w ith sta n d th e ir a t ­
ta c k s but w hen th e insects reach
an epidem ic s ta tu s even the g re a t­
est m onarch in th e forest m ay
die, and w eakened tre e s a re easy
prey.
T he high w inds of last Dec­
em b er 4 did considerable dam age
in th e C hetco riv e r w atershed.
T h e s ta te fo re ste r re p o rts th a t a
serio u s blowdown occured on the
A lfred A. Loeb M em orial p ark
and a su b seq u en t in festatio n by
th e D ouglas fir b ark beetle m ay
o ffe r a serio u s th re a t to o th e r
tim b e r on th e p ark area. A p­
p ro x im ately 80 p er cent of th e
tim b e r on a bench ju s t above th e
riv er is down and m ost of th e a d ­
d itio n al tre e s have e ith e r been
broken off o r dam aged by th e
falling tim ber.

T he M yrtlew ood is typically a
tre e of so u th w estern O regon and
n o rth e rn C alifornia. T he fam ily
nam e of the M yrtlew ood is Uni-
b ellu laria and consists of only one
species com m only know n as O re ­

rel o r S pice-tree. T he M rytlew ood
is a pungent a ro m a tic tre e w hich
w ith th e B roadleaved M aple form s
a considerable p a rt of th e forest
grow th in th e rich bo tto m lan d s
along ru n n in g strea m s.
T he wood of th e tre e is heavy,
hard, strong, close-grained and
q u ite v aria b le in color tho u g h th e
general tone is a light rich brow n.
It is used considerably for wood
tu rn in g and is th e m ost v alu ab le
wood produced in th e fo rests of
P acific N o rth A m erica.
