M eanwhile the Beavers were
w ithout a pitcher. Infielder Keith
Johnson took the mound and got
by the fifth but walked three con
secutive b atters and allowed one
hit in the sixth before Je rry M a
son was called in from the o u t
field. Not w arm ed up, Mason was
also wild and Roseburg had nine
big runs before the inning was
over.
Mickey Coen, W illam ette Uni
versity pitcher, had the Beavers
on his hip, allowing only five hits
and giving up a single talley in
the fourth and two belated runs
in the ninth.
The Sunday afternoon session
was a much closer tussle, although
very loosely played game w ith
Beavers holding a 3-2 edge to
the sixth. A fter a lone run in the
first inning, the Beavers drove
s ta r te r Don Siegmund from .the
mound with two runs in the fourth
but could do nothing to crafty
“Buzz” Sporer, his relief.
Beaver P itcher Jim N ierm an
deserves a b etter fate, giving up
five hits and one earned run. Five
Brookings errors were responsi
ble for two unearned tallies in
the third and single runs in the
seventh and eighth.
The league-leading D rain Black
Sox, headed by M anager Roy H ei
ser and Harve Storey, long-time
P ortland Beaver favorites, come
to Brookings next Sunday for the
last home game of the season.
The double-header s ta rts at 1:30.
