of lowerii.g the 7.64 miles of the Columbia Highway between Shogren and R ow tni East of Mosier from
its .»resent perch 747 feet above sealevei down to water grade along the river. The distance w ill thus
be shortened to 5.46 miles: the curvature w ill be reduced from 4.172 to 436 degree 4, a saving of 3,736
degrees of crooks and twists; the up and down rise and fail w ill be cut from 1,398 to 380 feet, a sav
ing of fuel-exhausting hoists of 1,018 feet, while the existing curves w il be cut from 75 to 12, elim
inating 63 around-the-corner driving hazards. Completed, the annual saving in fuel cost alone to the
motorists w ill rise into the six-figure bracket.
