Portland has become famous
for its Rose Festival, because it
may be said that there is one hun
dred per cent co-operation on the
part of everyone in the city. The
Pendleton Roundup, I can remem
ber, was once just a small rodeo.
What made these two events fa
mous? Co-operation, of course. It
is all that is needed light here
in Brookings.
NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS: K indly notify of any

cents per issue sent to the old address. Subscription will
be dropped unless subscriber notifies Pilot of change.

As the tim e ap proaches for p a rty conventions, th e voting citizen
begins to 1 m * a little w orried about the choice of candidates w hich
m ay lx* offered him com e next N ovem ber. Som e
of th e m ore serious ones a re even beginning to
doubt the reliab ility of e ith e r p arty .
T he D em ocratic p a rty is definitely a t a low’ ebb,
stam ped as it is w ith th e co rru p tio n which com es
to any group too long in control. T h eir only hope
is a leader not involved in the p re sen t governm ent
mess. K e fau v er would seem to be th a t m an.
H ow ever, since no m achine ev er q u its running
for sen tim en tal or sensible reasons, it is highly
probable th a t th e new -deal, fair-deal bigwigs
will risk losing the presidential jackpot in o rd e r
to nom inate one of th e ir own hirelings as a sort of
wolf in donkey’s clothing.
T h e R epublicans face th e ir g re atest o p p o rtu n ity since H oover’s
m o rtg a g e w as foreclosed in 1932. Yet they a re alread y beginning to
act in th e ir usual stum bling, bungling m anner. W ith R epublicans
ev e ry w h ere praying for an o u tstan d in g leader, a m an in whom all
can have confidence, E isenhow er would seem th e logical answ er. B ut
again. Eisenhow er, as K efauver, is not a p a rty m achine m an, and
ao it m ay w-ell be th a t th e tw o conventions m ay ignore th e people’s
choices in the in tere st of selfish p a rty (xditics.
W h ere th e people have voted in prim aries, K efau v er and E isen
how er have tak en o u tstan d in g leads. W here political p arty p o ten
ta te s have selected can d id ates through h o rse-trad in g and p o rk -b a r
rel prom ises, th e tw o m en have been ignored.
T h e very tact th a t E stes and Ike a re not the fair-haired boys of
th e p a rty m achines m ay bo the very clue th e A m erican v o ter is
seeking. If the p a rtie s are sm art, they will heed th e choice of the
people for those sam e people a re g ettin g m ighty fed up w ith po lit
ical m onkey-shines. If th e re w as ever an ap p ro p riate tim e for
th ird p a rty to win an election, it is now.

Cherry growers in the Hood River
