In the nam e of the Eisenhow er-for-President com
m ittee, Sen, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., chairm an,
Issued the fo llo w in g statem ent, Saturday, M a y 10:
" W e urgently request that you recommend to the
Republican voters in Oregon a list o f the most-
widely known and representative candidates for
delegate-at-large to the Republican National Con
vention so that voters who favor Eisenhower’s
nomination may not scatter and waste their votes
among the 50 candidates who are now running for
the 10 delegate positions.
W e fu lly realize the d ifficu lt and embarras
sing task you w ill confront in choosing such
a list from among the very many strong and
w orthy candidates who are on the ballot, but
we
convinced that unless such a list is
recommended by your Committee, the heavy
Eisenhower m ajority vote w ill be dangerously
scattered and diluted, and the concentrated
m ino rity vote fo r the T a ft candidates m ight
elect many o f them. They should be defeated
in their scheme o f filin g by petition to escape
the moral and legal obligation o f supporting
the choice o f the m ajority o f the Oregon vot-
ers. The only way to defeat that scheme is
to concentrate the m ajority Eisenhower vote
on a list o f candidates recommended by Ore
gon's own Eisenhower Campaign Committee.”
