BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT. BROOKINGS, OREGON
Special Edition Drew Comment From
Many Visitors To This Area, last Week
Reception of the Pilot’s first special, or Progress Edi
tion, was received with enthusiasm by the hundreds of
visitors who came to the area for the dedication of the
Brookings Plywood Coiporation plant.. Hundreds of
copies already have been mailed out, and hundreds are
about to be mailed, some as far away as South Africa,
and many to Alaska, to pick a few long distances.
T he intent of the Pilot, in this edition, was to depict
the progress made in this section of Oregon in the past
few years. Such a job is almost too much for any staff
to attempt in the short time used by the Pilot.
1 he Pilot still has about joo or more copies available
to any who wish to make mailings to far away places.
Wrappers will be furnished the purchasers if they so
desire. This is done at no extra cost.

DON'T SEND A 'CHAIN GANG'
To The National Convention!
Pow er-hungry politicians, seek ng to control the Oregon delegation to the N a
tional Republican Convention, are throw ing the full force of th eir m achine into
a ttack in g the eight so-called “petition” delegates.
The fact is that these delegates filed under provisions of the law designed to pro
tect the public ui der just such conditions as we have in the sta te of Oregon today.
P E T IT IO N M ETH O D PROTECTS T H E PEOPLE—
The Oregon Direct P rim ary law under which these eight delegates filed by pet1-
t en. seeking election as free delegates, not under control of the s ta te political m a
chine was initiated BY TH E PE O PL E and adopted in June, 1904, by an over
w helm ing vote.
I r 1915. the sta te legislature am ended the original law to provide an “additional
m ethod for selecting delegates w ithout in any way supplanting or disturbing th e
trad itional and tim e-honored m ethod of filing by petition.

In 1916 this am endm ent was carried to the S ta te Suprem e Court which ruled that
the am endm ei t “afforded another m ethod (additional to the petition m elhodl for
«•and d i ’es to get before the voters,” leaving the original petition m ethod u n
changed and intact.
PROTECTS A G A IN S T M A C H IN E POLITICS—
In 1939, the legislature passed a law taking from the people the privilege of
nam ing the r own d legates to the national convention. The law was referred to
th e .people who rejected it. choosing to leave both TH E PE T IT IO N METHOD
AND TH E DECLARATORY M ETHOD ON TH E STA TU TE BOOKS.
The petition m ethod of filing is therefore a valid law for the specific purpose of
protecting the public against m achine politics such as we have in the s ta te b>day.
