Beach on New Years day. His
passing w as a ttrib u te d to cancer.
He had been aw ay from his task
for a num ber of m onths, unable
to c a rry on.
Mr. B urton was quite an indi
i'iduahst. He *w ore no m a n ’s
collar" and he definitely did not
condone present trends o f gov
ernm ent, but lacked the m edium
in which to express his view s to
reach the m ost readers.
W hile I never could approach
this m an, and never could u n d er
stan d him, I had som ething of
an adm iratio n for his w illingness
to stan d on his principles. C er
tain ly he never failed to assert
his position.
Politics begins to boil in Oregon, first with announce
ment that Governor Douglas McKay would not be a
candidate to succeed himself, and that talk was making
the rounds that Earl Newbry would be candidate. That
is talk at this stage of the game. Later developments are
being scanned by hundreds of people over the state.
At this moment Curry county has had no talk which
might indicate candidates for any political office. In the
years since the Pilot has been published, politics never
has taken on any great interest—or at least the interest
