the experience of the area in the
past year.
That window-breaking mania
of someone just recently is a good i
example of how some regard the'
public and private property. An-1
other example of this type of
thinking is manifest among those
who have no regards for the feel
ings or well-being of others, who
make advances to women who
may happen to be alone.

THIS COMMUNITY NEEDS A BAND
Those fortunate enough to hear the V ancouver B. C.,
band Monday evening could not help thinking to them
selves: “I low nice it would be to have a band here."
That is a good question to take up right now. Mrs.
Noble Ellison once told the Pilot she knew of at least
15 children coming to Brookings this fall who would
want to continue their band work. These have their own
instrument, she said. With that as a nucleus, much might
lx* accomplished the’very hist year, many think.
Those Canadian youngsters, one as young as nine,
showed what musical training can do for the youth —
of the | mhsc , the self-confidence andshowmanship youth
can acquire, if trained. The Port Orford band, which
all of us saw. Lily Parade day, is another good example.
It is no use trying to say: We can't for it costs too
much.” Band instruments, it is true, are expensive. Many
of the larger instruments arc out of the price range of
many families, but even th.it should deter the formation

added to the movement by the
appearance of the Canadians on
Monday, seemed to decide the
issue. Brookings has a nucleus of
a dozen or more now, and with
addition of an instructor or di
rector, there seems to be little
question.
Outfitting a band with suitable
uniforms should be the project
of one or more local civic organ
izations. QerQainly to outfit a
band so it will make a good ap-
pearanoe will cost more than
a thousand dollars -lucky if it
can be done for that. However,
a band must come and soon.
People of this area are urged
to keep vigilance at their homes
and property in town until the
city is empowered to hire police.
There are some in the area who
