Barbershoppers Seek Recruits; Many
Activities Planned In Coming Months
Deadline Nears On
"G. I. Education"
Barbershoppers and their wjves, wherever they are,
and they “are” in the hundreds of thousands, are not
strangers, even among folks they’ve never seen or heard
of before. No one, with a song in their heart, has been,
from the time of the earliest wandering minstrel.
If you have a hankering for harmony, regardless of
your knowledge of mus^ you are really passing up
something if you don’t at least give it a trial at Chctco
Grange hall where the Brookings chapter SPEBSQSA
assembles each monday evening at eight—as you are!
And, ladies, if you have a hunch—even a little hunch
—that the Old Man would fit in, Ixxist him. The wives
of many present members gave them their initial shove.
Like going to sch(x>l with Junior, come the first time
with him. If you have a similarily inclined neighbor, in
fect him. Both we and you and them and many others
will be grateful.
Most recent converts arc Bob Swanson, with the Ply-
w<x>d corporation, Rod Hermann, milk processor, and
Frenchy Arrell, druggist.
Monday evening, June iS, the local chapter members
and wives will be guests of the Crescent City chapter,
and wives and ladies at a ladies night. The local group
is making plans for its third annual “Parade,” to be
held 1icre early this autumn.
GOLD BEACH—According to
C. E. Seger, county service of
ficer, World War 2 veterans not
presently in training must en
roll in school or other educa
tional facilities by July 25, or
lose their G. I. Bill benefits for
ever.
This means that a veteran who
wants to enter college next fall
for the first time must start a
residence course this» summer
session in order to save his en
titlement. Most summer sessions
commence in mid-June.
The G. I. deadline affects all
veterans discharged prior to July
25, 1947, unless they are in
school now and interrupted for
normal summer vacations.
The state vocational education
department is planning to ac
commodate
last-minute
regis
trants in on-farm and vocational
training. Veterans who still de
sire to enroll in on-farm train
ing may do so right up to the
July 25 deadline, at the nearest
high schools teaching vocational
agriculture.
The Oregon Technical Insti
tute at Klamath Falls plans to
hold a special summer session,
starting July 9, to give veterans
a chance to start vocational,
technical and business training
before their rights expire. Ap
plications should be directed to
the registrar, Oretech, Ore.
Private business and technical
schools should be contacted for
registration dates.
Veterans are also advised to
apply immediately to the Vet
erans Administration regional
othce, Portland, for certificate of
eligibility. They are cautioned
that any course taken this sum

Shirley Bowlin, petite junior, who
had no competition, did hold a
grade point average high enough
that she would have won had
she had coinpet ion. She will leave
June 12 to go to Drain where
she will visit friends and con

also chosen for this honor.
Sponsored by the Depart merit

cratic leadership that may be
found anywhere.
The purpose of Girl State is
to provide citizenship training
for girls of high school age in
every state, to afford an oppor
tunity to live together as self-
governing citizens; and to in
form them about the duties, priv
ileges, rights and responsibilities
of American citizenship, in or
der that they may understand
and participate in the function
ing of their government; help
them to grasp the meaning of
some of the responsibilities which
they must assume as American
citizens, when they become adult
women.
Girls State starts with the or
ganizing of city government, then
the county, the state. The girls
elect their own officials and with
each selection the girls immedi
ately function in their respec
tive offices.
As soon as the state officers
are elected the program is car
