Along Azalea Row
By B. Miller
Mrs. Katherin Rapraeger rec
ommends Laxton’s Progress peas
for the vegetable garden, along
the ocean. She says she had.ex
cellent success with them.
Mrs. Ruth Bathiany, a camellia
fancier with seventy varieties,
suggests espalier camellias. A re
cent visitor at the Camellia show
at Berkeley, she reports this
method as particularly effective.
She also suggests planting ca
mellias in redwood containers so
that they may be moved about,
out of the wind, and also as an
added decorative feature where
ever one is needed. Even when
not in bloom th glossy green fo
liage is most attractive. Camel
lias are especially suitable for
containers as they are slow in
growth with compact root struc
ture. It is only necessary to re
pot them to larger containers
every five years. Interesting facts
about camellias are that they
bloom during dormant period,
and are a member of the tea
family. Mrs. Bathiajiy recom
mends the Eebraury article in
Sunset Magazine titled "Camel-
lia Buyer’s Guide.” She is enthu-
siastic about the new Governor
Earl Warren camellia, especially
beautiful.
from the ambulance. However,
she managed to distract them,
before they accomplished their
mission.
Some driver, reckless or other-
wise, climbed the sidewalk late
Saturday, rammed the flower box
in front of Redfield Grocery win
dow and broke the glass. Black
tire marks were visible on the
sidewalk in front.
Mrs. Goldizen lost ‘her purse at
the office of the Pilot, Monday,
as she stepped out for just a
moment. Fortunately as she was
leaving, she reached for her coin
purse, probably on a thought she
might purchase something. It is
unfortunate for the thief for in
this coin purse she had $75. The
fountain
bag contained only
pen and some small articles pe
culiar to a woman’s bag.

We are not in the business of
selling fire extinguishers, but L.
A. Harvey has one which is not
manually operated. It is hung
from the ceiling, and being glass,
breaks under intense heat, re
leasing a liquid which becomes a
gas and smothers the fire. Of
course it cannot do the impossi
ble, but I have seen what these'
fire extinguishers did to put out
a fire in Dixon’s garage a few
years ago, and 1 wouldn’t be
without several of them..
