There are times when even the
most devoted of brides feel a wild
desire to wallop their beloved with
the nearest available object. For
fifteen minutes I had been patiently
watching Jeff wander silently from
room to room picking up articles
and putting them down, rattling
doorknobs, poking in cabinets.
Finally, in as polite a tone as I
could muster I inquired:
“Looking for something?”
“Just curious,” he volunteered
at last. “I wondered how many
items we have around here made
of copper. You know, With the
silent butler, plant holders, trays
fireplace stuff, doorknobs, and 1
don’t know what all, we rhave
enough copper to start a small
war!”
“No, thank you,” I put in firmly.
“But that’s exactly where copper
is going,” Jeff replied, “because
without it our
fighting men
would simply
have to give
up! That red
metal is vital
to practically
all modern
weapons. Fur
thermore,” he
said, warming up to the subject,
“we take so much copper in this
country for peacetime uses that
about one third of our requirements
have to be imported.”
It finally developed that Jeff had
read an article describing a new
government copper order effective
March 1st which will prohibit the
manufacture of more than three
hundred items using copper and its
alloys. What piqued Jeff’s curiosity
was that the article declared the
order would affect every American.
He pointed out the truth of this
statement by listing a few of the
prohibited items such as jewelry,
dress ornaments, and decorative
accessories used in homes. Even
more important, the ban will reach
manv fields including building
which depends heavily on copper
for hardware, for roofing materials
such as flashing, gutters and down
spouts. and for pipe and tube in
plumbing systems.
We discussed the situation at
length and I forgot about earlier
surges toward mayhem. Only why

To put it politely—I’m disturbed.
To put it honestly — I’m peeved!
The objects of my anger are
those speechmakers and writers
who now say the washing machine
is a luxury and that, accordingly,
its production should be halted in
favor of defense production and
the continued output of certain
“essential” civilian products.
I am perfectly willing to give up
the luxuries of peacetime life if it
is going to help our nation in these
perilous times. But I strongly dis
agree with anyone who says that
washing machines are luxuries.
