WILL WAR HAMPER THIS AREA
Curry County, since 1946, has progressed in an amazing manner,
with the greatest single-year growth coming in 1950, the year just
ended, the Pilot has been reminded from almost every corner. What
the threat of war will do to hamper this progress remains to be
seen but almost everyone in the area holds a bright outlook.
Offering for reasons of this continued progress is the fact that
timber, while curtailed for local consumption, will be needed more
and more in the war effort and preparedness program, thus as-
curing continued work in that field. However, draft and other war
industries may hamper local mills in shortage of man power.
The economy of the county, since 1947, has become more sound
since the boom caused by the lilies came to earth and stabilized
Production of synthetic hemp by cultivation of New' Zealand flax
may add another crop to Curry County, if people will get statrted
as quickly as they can in this new' venture.
There is no use trying to delude ourselves in thinking there will
be no bad affects from war threats, but with vital industries in
the area, little paralyzing effects should be felt. The coming year
is likely to see somewhat steady growth of the county.
