THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1950
According to A. C. Shaffer, in
charge of Cepe Blanco light
house, Xelly Ja radioed its posi
tion as off St. George reef, but
the coast guard tug. Yacona, of
Eureka, could not locate the
craft after trying several hours.
When the Kelly J described its
surroundings it was discovered
that it was directly off Cape
Blanco, close to the rocks, hav
ing drifted there during the
stormy night. Later when the
Yacona reached it, fuel was tak
en on as it was felt that it could
navigate under its own power.
Pilot "Pictures"
Create Interest In
Hews Illustrations
In recent issues of the Pilot,
amply supplied with pictures to
illustrate news stories, interest
has run exceedingly high, and
all available copies of the issues
have been sold out completely—
despite the fact that more cop
ies have been printed each time.
Especially attracting interest
with the story of D. M. “Bull
hide” Moore, pioneer merchant
of Gold Beach, who rounded out
a long merchantile career last
May. Interest in the recent Pa
rade of Quartets was given im
petus by the publication of all
available pictures of the par
ticipants.
The Pilot seeks pictures of all
events possible, which would be
of great value to illustrate the
articles. These pictures may not
always be published in the week
of happening.
Pictures must be glossy prints,
of plenty of contrast, for lack
of this attribute w’ould result
in a poor newspaper picture.
Fishing Craft Lost
4n Recent Storm

Coast guard cutter. Bottom, of
Coos Bay, reportedly came to
stand by in case additional aid
was needed. All craft received
terrific buffeting from the high
winds and seas. It is said that
ten miles north of the cape the
Kelly J began shipping too much
water and sank.
Only a few days after the
storm. Nelly’s Cove was again
free of the pack of drift and
seaweed, which was, according
to Hinderlie, the worst seen in
may years.

PORT ORFORD—During t h e
recent stormy week-end a dis-!
tress call was received at the J
coast guard station from Kelly
J, 45-foot fishing boat, out of
fuel and lost at sea. Arthur Hin-
derlie, officer in charge, said this
station could not answer the call
because Nelly’s Cove was full of
heavy drift and packed with sea-;
weed from the storm, making it i
impossible to launch the lifeboat.
