The Worlds Best Climate
Azalea Garden Club Plans Busy Year;
Yearbooks Show 'Ambitious Program'
The 1950-1951 year for Azalea Garden Club will be a busy one
if the yearbook is taken as criterion. Under presidency of Mrs.
B E (Clara) Kerns, this club has set out the four projects: .
To make the home more beautiful; 2. Conserve our wild flowers,
native trees and birds; 3. Sponsor a 4-H club Scholarship; 4. Learn
the art of flower arrangement. Special attention is being paid to
the greatest club achievement, the flower show next year.

will be discussed by Mrs. C. W.
Judkins. Storage of bulbs will
be the topic for Mrs. Ruth Bath­
iany and Thanksgiving table ar­
rangements will be discussed.
A dessert luncheon will be the
attraction of the Dec. 14 meet­
ing when Mrs. Hairy Lockland
will conduct an Oide Tyme Xmas
party. There will be a gift ex­
change of home-made or home-
grown gifts.
The club will observe its an­
niversary at the January 11 af-
faii, with the meeting being con­
ducted by the past presidents.
Lloyd Moss will discuss Use
Ferns in Your Garden at the
February 8, meeting. Commercial
Daffodils will be discussed by
Mrs. Ray Streubing.
“Adventures in Camellias” by
Mrs. Ruth Bathiany, will be the
topic of the March 8 meeting.
Mrs. Chester Maris will also dis­
cuss Chinese Line arrangements.
Mrs. Albert Joy will tell the
members “How to Attract Birds
to Our Gardens" at the April 12
meeting. Mrs. Frank Pallady has
a message on wild flower law’ to
tell, and the Junior gardeners
will be exploited by Mrs. E. B.

and family have moved into the
house vacated by the Earl Ruby
family at Arizona Inn. Mr. Voel­
cker is the new’ principal at the
Ophir schools.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Johnston
are on a trip to Klamath Falls.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johns­
ton of Schenectady, N. Y., have
been visiting at the home of
his father, Victor Johnston.
Mrs. Ida Sherman and twins,
Carl and Carol, of Coquille, are
visiting her parents. Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Adams.
Mrs. Pete Miller o f Myrtle
Point is visiting at the hom° of
her sisters, Mrs. Dick Guthrie.
She brought her little daughter,
Connie Stevens, who has been in
Myrtle Point for the past two
weeks, I ack to her home here.
Mrs. Fred Adams had the mis­
fortune of breaking her ankle
last Wednesday.
Mrs. Frances Burris, who will
teach at Gold Beach this year,
has moved into one of the C.
M. Gray cabins.
Dave Thompson has returned
Dave Thompson has returned
from Portland. He announces he
will attend Lewis & Clark Col­
lege, Portland, this year.
Ophir Grange H. E. C. met
at the home of Mrs. Orville
Phipps at Gold Beach last Tues­
day.
Ophir Community is really on
the busy side these days. New
people are moving in nearly ev­
ery day and many are looking
for living quarters, and not able
to find them. The cause mills
and logging. There are now four
mills in the immediate area.
Johnny Snyder of Bandon is
visiting friends and relatives in
Ophir.
J. S. Allen went to Coquille
Thursday, and returned Friday.
Ophir high and grade schools
will open Tuesday, Sept. 5. We
have bad a long and lovely vaca­
tion but most of us will be glad
to go back to school. (Hush, boys
— I’m trying to make this sound
good).

Another transaction of interest •
is the sale of two acres and the *
dwelling of the J. E. Lawrence
property near the mouth of the
Chetco to Dr. and Mrs. E. F.
Duvall of DeMotte, Indiana. The
Duvalls formerly owned proper­
ty near the Winchuck river, sold
before departming for Indiana
some three years ago. The lure
of the west has again beckoned
and it is expected the Duvalls
will be here to stay when they
return to Brookings, about the
last of September.
Both transfers were handled
by Bob Perkins of the Pete J.
Lesmeister agency.
