Pelicans Nosed Out In Tenth, Sun., As
Merchants Come From Behind, 10 to 9
M
Brookings Pelicans lost a wild
and wooly ball game to Crescent
City Merchants by a 10 to 9 {al
ley, Sunday, as the Merchants
were handed four gift runs in
the bottom of the 10th, all forced
across the plate on six bases on
balls, a hit batsman and an er
ror. The Pelicans had previously
come through with three runs
in their half of the tenth, to all
intents and purposes putting the
game on ice but for the extreme
wildness on the part of three
Pelican hurlers again proved the
old adage that a ball game is
never over until the last man
is I out.
The game started as a real
putchers’ duel between Bob As-
tin of the Pelicans and Selsor of
the Merchants. Crescent City
scored in the first inning on a
fluke home run to center just out
of reach of centerfielder McLean.
They added another in the fifth
— also a home of the tainted va
riety which seemed like a single
over second baseman Holzgang’s
head which rolled wet ween Mc
Lean and Finnell.
Selsor had meanwhile present
ed the Pelicans with a string of
goose-eggs. He, however, also de
veloped wildness in the sixth an 1
forced in the first Brookings run
on a combination of a two-base
hit, and three walks The third of
three Merchants double play»
again broke up what looked like
a big Pelican scoring opportuii-
ity at that time.
The Merchants came back with
two runs in the sixth to lead 4 to
1 but the Pelicans retaliated in
the seventh with three to tie the
score and then went ahead 6
to 4 in the eighth. This was
short-lived as the Merchants tied
it up again with a brace of runs
in their half. It was in this in
ning that Pitcher Astin slipped
in fielding a bunt and injured
his side. This was, no doubt, the
turning point of the game, as
an out on that play would even
tually have retired the side sans
a run. It also proved to be As
tin’s undoing as he soon devel
oped a wild streak, bringing in
Dick Salvage to relieve him.
Both teams went scoreless in
the ninth, setting the stage for
the aforementioned wierd tenth
inning. The loss threw the Peli-
<Cans in a three-way tie with the
Ashland and Crescent City ag
gregations for fourth spot in the
league standings, each having
won five and lost five.
Roseburg Here Sunday
Roseburg, loser in only one
league game this season, comes
to Brookings for a double header
(both league games) next Siin
day. The first game starts at 1
p. m. at the local field.
Business Manager Pete Les-
meister signed three new players
ever the week-end. Veteran pro
fessional catcher, Tex Chandler
and Bob Fasel, shortstop, both
played in the Crescent City game.
Floyd Shotwell, a right-handed
pitcher from Medford and Eu
gene in the Far West league
earlier this season, will be on
hand next Sunday to pitch one
of the games against Roseburg.

Garbage is being dumped on
the hill property which we have
improved at considerable c o s t.
The road leading to the hill gives
an opportunity to get a fine view
of the surrounding country. If
the practice of dumping garbage
is not stopped, gates will be put
up to destroy access entirely. Do
cease this practice.
