Salem, a newspaper, published
by Charles A. Sprague, former
governor of Oregon. The let

Editor: we are forwarding to

of the Los Angeles registration
of Dave Hoover and proof of an
editorial published thereon in
the Sunday Daily Statesman.
As a candidate against U. S.
Senator Wayne L. Morse, Hoo
ver is now parading as "A Real
Republican.”
In exposing this political fraud,
ex-Governor Charles A. Sprague,
publisher of the Statesman, has
rendered a signal service to the
public.
As a public service, the Capital
Press is publishing the mat and
editorial in this week’s issue.
We feel you will want to do

The editorial as appeared in

Who is the “Real Republican f”
Dave Hoover’s claim to the ti
tle of "real Republican” is under
some challenge. On this page ap
pears a certified copy of Hoovers
registration record in California.
He registered in 1939 in Los An
geles county but refused to give
any party affiliation. The clerk
accoi-dingly filled in the party
blank thus: "Declines to state.”
That was how Hoover felt in
1939, unwilling to identjfy what
he would enroll in, al-
though the new deal which he
now denounces was still in com
mand in Washington. /Xfter Hoo-
.er came to Oregon in 1942 he
egistered as a Republican, and
now poses as the truest of the
breed as he makes his race for
Vnited States senator.
Hoover's party pedigree is un-
der challenge from another
source. John McBride, his little
known opponent along with
Wayne Morse, also uses "real
Republican” on his literature as
applying to himself. And he as
serts that Hoover was a demo
crat until 1933.

"While the lamp

holds out to burn, the vilest sin
ner may return.” We would like
to convert other Democrats or
others who "decline t o state
their party affiliation to the Re
publican faith. It does irk us
though when late converts start
drawing up rules of orthodoxy
and "churching” those with whom
they disagree.
With two men claiming to De
the "real” Republicans the han
dle is being overworked. We like
much better the representation
made' by a legislative candidate
who refers to himself as a "real
istic” Republican. Morse is one.
And Republican voters better be
realistic if they want their party
tj gain in public favor. Oregon
