STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES!
Emil R. Peterson, Historian, Coos-Curry Pioneer
Association, R. 1, Box 528, North Bend, Ore.
Roland Prairie, on the south fork of the Coquille
river, was the pioneer home of the Lehnherr iamily
in the late fifties and the early sixties. Fannie Lehn
herr Dixon, in the biography of her father, Christian
Lehnherr, pioneer, says that their home was a regular
stopping place tor judges, attorneys, and otheis in
going to and from the county seat twice a year for
the regular term of court. Her father always looked
forward to this opportunity to visit with well-in
formed men from the “outside.”
# .
The question is: Was the Roland Prairie-Eckley-
Sixes River trail one of the main-traveled routes
in going from Roseburg, through ( oos county, and
down into Curry county in the early days ? I would
like to hear from anyone who can shed any light
on this subject. Let me hear by letter!

"Buy At Home" Appeal Is Being Made
Brookings Merchants Before Christmas
T
Boasting stocks of goods that will meet the demands and wants
of almost everyone in the community, several Brookings mcichants
have decided to do something about an appeal to people to buy
for Christmas at home.” On page five of this issue is their ad
vertisement- their “earnest request.”
These merchants have, to the limit of their capital, stocked con
siderable Christmas gift offerings. They have bought with wisdom
concerning the ability ot the local people to paj and they htl
they can meet competition, both mail and other towns.
“Be Practical,” is the theme these merchants place before local
Christmas shoppers. They claim that practical gilts will be moie
appreciated and to this assertion, add the claim that piactical
gifts are less expensive in the final analysis.

Confused about Oregon’s new school bus stopping law? This is the way it works, un a two-lane
roadway, you must stop w’hen meeting or overtaking a school bus which has halted to load or unload
children. On roadw*avs having three or more lanes, you must stop only if you re traveling in the same
direction. After having stopped, you must not proceed as long as any children are leaving the bus or
crossing the roadway. To assist in holding traffic while children cross the road, all buses aie being equip
ped with red stop signal arms as rapidly as possible. You must stop for the bus whether or not the stop
arm is displayed. Use of this signal by the bus driver simply indicates the situation requires you to remain
stopped. The law applies equally to city streets and rural roads and highways.
